Skittish, the basement as it is called , is a craton , granite rocks that are as old as the planet , all granite is radioactive to some extent , radioactive decay ( half-lives etc ) from uranium and thorassium ( i think ) produce helium , the geo-thermal system , like a huge pressure cooker , soaks it all up and delivers it when the waters cool and de -pressurise at a higher place in the system ( crust ) , so we have tapped into an ancient helium gas production system , thats as simple as i can put it ;) , ng.
