Why would they then say this-

It’s not puzzling if the company then comes along with news of cancelled Gen 1 orders in October.

Companies routinely write off millions in R&D, and if STMicro do cancel Gen 1, they’re probably not completely writing off the tech, just deferring it until Gen 2 materials arrive. A more cynical viewpoint- perhaps wait until the 2025 seeding patent expire and they’ll just make it in-house or have it made more cheaply elsewhere.

I realise the CEO says other patents protect the IP, but how well, and it still takes money to pursue infringers.

The process at Nanoco end didn’t alter.

The bottom line is as investors we can see no visibility of an addressable market for Nanoco products in sensors or display in the near term.

Global shutter doesn’t automatically mean QD’s. Plus we don’t know whether anything beyond sampling volumes of sensors have been made- no information.

Nanoco themselves said they were ready to go two years ago, everything was locked and loaded, they were simply waiting on the customer to give the green light.

So the tech has been ready for a long time.

BT himself said these devices have been sampling now for at least two years. Bearing in mind the tech was well developed before then.

If STMicro were aiming for a wide market share, one would think they’d want them out there as soon as possible, and that they’d be talking about the huge advantages the QD tech gives their product.

Instead there’s static, we have to ferret about on the internet looking up scientific journals and prying into LinkedIn profiles trying to get a scrap of information, trying to put two and two together and often coming up with five.

Compare Nanoco to a company like Metalenz. The latter go from startup to high volume production within a few years, different processes and tech but operating within a shared space of infrared sensors.

Well AMSOsram invested $1.5bn in a manufacturing plant for Apples MicroLED production, which got binned earlier this year. Blew a large hole in the company, which it’s probably large enough to recover from but still had an impact.

Companies change their plans. STMicro may well have changed theirs, and they’re more than big enough to absorb any R&D costs for a few more years or adopt an alternative technology.

For Nanoco and its investors, this can be far more harmful though.

OEM’s don’t want a lead based product IMO. Sadly at present that’s all Nanoco have to offer.

Lot of nasty talk on here from both sides of the camp, but the bearish have called it right to date.

Don’t know if a change of CEO would help or not, but I do think BT has become a liability now and should make way for someone fresh.

Does a company like STMicro muck about with scheduling like this if it’s serious about a technology?

This is a cancellation of Gen 1 materials. The company is just trying to kick the ball down the road with ambiguous dialogue as they did with display.

They haven’t got a business.

STMicro remain their sole customer for Gen 1 material, and they have said they’re not continuing, believing anything will materialise beyond that is just wishful thinking.

Don’t know the reasons behind the cancellation, but I suspect the use of lead is a major factor.

Gen 2 material at least two years away, probably three, key patent expiring year, and I believe the competition is snapping at their heels.

Display seems to have gone silent.
