Hunting doubles profits as oil soars Date: Thursday 25 Aug 2011 LONDON (ShareCast) - The booming oil market helped energy services group Hunting nearly double pre-tax profits in the half year to 30 June. Pre-tax profits were up to £22.1m from £11.6m over the same period the previous year on revenues up to £251.3m from £193.3m. Hunting noted that in the year so far, oil prices have averaged $78 to $113 a barrel.

Commenting on the results Dennis Proctor, Chief Executive, said: "Our results today demonstrate the momentum of Hunting's activities as the industry continues to increase its investment in drilling and developing new resources. Our businesses are performing well and continue to indicate good year on year growth. With the acquisitions of Titan and Dearborn, Hunting is continuing its strategy of acquisitive growth in businesses which increases the products and services delivered to the well bore. Both acquisitions focus on the high growth, high margin sectors of the industry, where Hunting has invested heavily since 2008."

Topps Tiles warns on profit Date: Thursday 25 Aug 2011 LONDON (ShareCast) - Tile and wood flooring specialist Topps Tiles said group revenue fell 10.4% on a like-for-like basis in the first seven weeks of the fourth quarter and now expects full year earnings to be below the current range of analyst expectations. The group, which operates over 300 stores in the UK, has been hit by a stagnant housing market with many households putting renovation projects on hold. Revenue for the 13 weeks of the third financial quarter fell by 1.9% on a like-for-like basis. "We consider that a decline in consumer confidence is the key driver for this recent performance," Topps said in a trading update. "Management will continue to push forwards with the strategy previously outlined in order to protect and grow our market leading position," it added. Topps said it will be taking measures such as driving gross margin gains through increased direct sourcing, prudent cost controls and improving operational efficiencies wherever possible.

Canaccord Genuity downgrades Serco Group from buy to hold, target price cut from 680p to 545p

The boss of WPP, the world’s biggest advertising group, yesterday defied the gloom by saying this year’s slump in shares was an overreaction by global financial markets. Chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell said there were “six storm clouds” gathering over the world economy but the market falls had been too much. He added: “Markets usually get it right but they tend to go too far on the way up and on the way down. They probably recovered too quickly but now they have gone the other way," according to the Daily Express.
