Dao Ruang-2 Appraisal well spud Salamander Energy plc announces that the Dao Ruang-2 appraisal well, Block L15/50, Onshore North East Thailand, spudded on 16 January 2011. Dao Ruang is a 1993 Texaco gas discovery that has potential gross mean resources of 500 Bcf. Salamander has a 50% interest in, and is operator of, Block L15/50. Dao Ruang-2 will be drilled, using the MB Century 26 rig to approximately 1,670 metres total vertical depth sub-sea. The well will target a fracture network in the Pha Nok Khao Permian carbonate reservoir on the eastern flank of the structure as mapped on the recently acquired high resolution 3D seismic. The well is expected to take approximately 45 days to complete on a dry hole basis. On completion of the Dao Ruang-2 well, the rig will drill the Dao Ruang-3 appraisal well targeting a fracture network on the northwest flank of the structure.

IMI bucked the falling trend during morning trading, jumping 46.5 to 957p thanks to a push from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The broker upgraded its stance on the engineer to “buy” from “neutral”, saying its valuation was attractive. Analysts said that the ongoing move to low cost manufacturing provided opportunities for further margin growth.

One of America’s biggest healthcare companies is examining a fresh takeover approach to Smith & Nephew, the FTSE 100 maker of hip and knee replacements. Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceuticals giant, is understood to be weighing a formal offer after a tentative approach was rejected last year. Its plans have put S&N’s board, led by chief executive David Illingworth, on red alert, and the group’s advisers have begun preparing a defence. A revised bid is expected to be worth at least 800p a share, valuing S&N at just over £7bn. The earlier approach was pitched at 750p a share, the Sunday Times reports.

National Grid is poised for fresh turmoil this week as an American regulator rejects the utility group’s demands for price increases. Investors have been putting pressure on Steve Holliday, the chief executive, to address the performance from the American arm since he sprung a surprise £3.2bn rights issue on them last May. Holliday said the cash call was needed to cover the soaring cost of upgrading Britain’s ageing power and gas networks. Analysts say the company may need up to £35bn over the next decade to link in the wind farms and nuclear power stations required to meet climate change targets, the Sunday Times reports.

Ahead of next week's trading update, Seymour Pierce downgraded its recommendation for JD Wetherspoon (JDW) from "hold" to "reduce with a 400p target price. Reading across from rival Luminar, as well as from other UK leisure groups who have recently updated on trading, the broker thinks that the November/December snows may have reduced annual like-for-likes at the business by some 1%-2%. Commenting on this, Seymour thinks the market may not have factored this in yet, especially as shares are up nearly 10% since the start of November

Panmure Gordon issued a "buy" rating for Hilton Food Group (HFG) with a 305p target price. The broker notes that the group, in its typically reliable fashion, delivered another statement saying that trading has been in line with expectations. In particular, the firm reported strong volume growth, particularly in the Netherlands and Central Europe, in addition to a pick up in growth in Sweden. The new facility in Denmark remains on schedule and on budget, and Panmure expects this will accelerate earnings growth in 2011 and 2012.

Remember that Hammerson deals in prime, well located property that is overwhelmingly occupied; in short it develops (either directly or in joint venture with major international investing funds) owns and trades assets that are back in current and long term demand - the kind of property that large, long term investing funds want to buy and are buying. At the same time, Hammerson is expected to pay its shareholders prospective, progressively rising dividends this year and next. The historic and estimated dividend yields for Hammerson shares are relat ively attractive at the moment and a good reason for holding them by those who want reliable looking dividend income. Hammerson property is well occupied and commercial, producing an essential revenue stream. The latest information from the company is that its retail property is 96% occupied in the UK and 98% let in France; its office property is also 95.9% occupied - making the group property occupancy rate 96.6% overall. It is predominantly investment grade rather than speculative. The value of the company's long term investment portfolio in the last (30 June 2010) balance sheet was GBP5,485 million and had grown 13.4% in the preceding twelve months. At a share price of 434.5p and long term property investments (which I estimate at 790p a share) Hammerson's equity stands at a discount of 45% to the company's long term property portfolio. In book to price investing, that is an undeniably cheap valuation of a company whose value is conventionally measured in terms of its property assets.

Mine development at Crocette has progressed in line with company expectations during the quarter. "We have gone through a transition year in which our goal was to streamline our operations at CRM and this has been evidenced by generally increased tonnages and improved concentrator recoveries compared to 2009. We look forward to production increases, as well as production from Crocette, which we expect will come on stream and contribute ounces within the next 12 months," said Ian Rozier.

Xanthamgum - okay my personal view is - there is an obvious resistance at the 270 - 280 - since March 2010 it has hit this 3 times and retraced. Similarily it bounces off the 205 - 215 mark and has done thrice within the same timescales. If the SP breaks 280 on the news of spudding - mid Jan (now!)- then my personal view is that this could take the 300 level out. Subsequent good drill results would see your 330. It is remaining fairly constant at its present level as the RNS should be out imminently re spudding. Im presently not in here but only because funds are elsewhere on rather more risky investments - I cant help myself sometimes. This is a far more solid and 'predictable' share - famous last words!
