The drilling of the Boyui X2 well, located in the Caipipendi Block (Tarija), gives encouraging results. At 7,640 meters deep, the operating companies, headed by Repsol Bolivia, detected the Huamampampa formation, an arena that in other wells in Bolivia is a producer of natural gas.
The finding comes approximately 19 months after the start of drilling at this well that became the deepest well in Bolivia and which, according to expectations, has a potential of 3 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of reserves. It is known that the investment made by Repsol, Shell and PAE - which make up the Caipipendi consortium - exceeds 100 million dollars.
The main operator of the Caipipendi consortium, when consulted by this means about the news in that well, limited itself to reporting the following: "Repsol Bolivia continues working on the drilling of the Boyuy X2 well".
According to the analyst and former Minister of Hydrocarbons, Álvaro Ríos, Bolivia has good news for the detection of the Huamampampa formation and that it remains to make the respective analysis to see the size and behavior of the reservoir.
He explained that at the beginning of the drilling, the operators planned to reach three production levels in the Huamampampa formation and estimated to find approximately 3 TCF to increase the reserves, however, according to the analyst, the geology did not work as expected and the Huamampampa formation over 7,400 meters, which makes Boyui one of the deepest wells in the region.
"Many studies are still needed to determine the commerciality of the discovery or to have reached the most productive arena in Bolivia. It will be necessary to determine the productivity of the sand at this depth, make long-term tests and early production facilities. Probably perform more seismic and one or two development wells to determine the size of the reservoir and many other activities, "explained Rios.
He also added that it should "evaluate the costs associated with all the activities that have to be done and determine the commerciality of the sand with the reality of the new markets".
When asked about the effects that the discovery of a new reservoir of natural gas has for Bolivia, Ríos assured that it is a positive step to have arrived in this productive arena, which is why much has already been gained with the acquired geological knowledge. . He added that, in case the discovery is commercial, there will be more reserves and more production to compete with the neighboring markets of Argentina and Brazil "and at the time consider something export by some other way overseas."
In mid-October, the Minister of Hydrocarbons, Luis Alberto Sánchez, said he had expectations that Boyui X2 would be an important well, although he admitted that it was a complicated well. In addition, he said that the fact of reaching a depth greater than 7,000 meters is a positive aspect because it allows us to understand the behavior of geology at that depth. "It does not mean tha
