CHANCER
Margaret Thatcher pressured the EU to grow and accept more nation states
She wanted to reduce the dominance of France (agri) and Germany (industries)
by increasing membership and more outside votes
She is credited with the single market as well as the common market was inefficient producing different goods for each EU member,
This was decades before the 4 freedoms/ EURO was introduced.
After WW2 America had increased it's wealth many times....producing most of the Allies military hardware.
We were told as a bankrupt nation that our massive loans were conditional on breaking up our Empire.
Which the Yanks despised.
They also banged the heads of France and Germany together that created the beg of the common market.
The carrot was the vast funds of the Marshall plan.
This first trade deal was just between their Coal and Steel industries....be was successful and later 6 nations started the common market
The point is ....the Yanks knew that trading together would create a united Europe with far less threat of another major war,
Churchill advocated a united Europe too..but as we still had an empire...that excluded us.
So both Countries wanted a close trading united Europe as the BEST way to avoid another major war
