Bashar al-Assad was at the time attending postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital in London and so was called back. He took over when's his father died in 2000.
A series of crackdowns in 2001–02 ended the Damascus Spring, a period of cultural and political activism marked by calls for transparency and democracy. A civil war ensured.
Assad's presidency is a highly personalist dictatorship, which governs Syria as a totalitarian police state, and has been characterised by numerous human rights violations and severe repression. A truly awful man. If he was taken out, Syria would be better place although much of it lays in ruins.
