One of the things that concern Northern Ireland MPs is the fact that when it comes to defence jobs and getting contracts, Northern Ireland falls behind. The Minister will be aware that Thales, on the border of my constituency, was recently able to secure its workforce. What steps can he take to ensure that each region of the United Kingdom, but especially Northern Ireland, can benefit from defence spending for the workforce? We can do the job the same as everywhere else; we just need the opportunity.

I thank the hon. Member for his question, which is incredibly important. As he knows, this Government are absolutely committed to ensuring that jobs in the defence sector, within an ESG framework, are protected. I am happy to meet him to discuss further the issues relating to his constituency and Northern Ireland.

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) has launched a competition for an eight-year contract worth around £300m to ensure the UK’s future Type 31 frigate fleet availability for Royal Navy operations.

The aim is to create a collaborative, hybrid solution to optimise the availability and operational service of all five T31 Frigates, with the contract providing vital ship management services as part of the T31 Through-life support solution. The competition will guarantee an optimum support solution for the future of the Royal Navy’s Type 31 ships whilst determining best value for money for the taxpayer.

Not only will it further develop the National Shipbuilding Strategy, but it will also contribute to social value and net zero targets, opening up the warship support market to new entrants and proving new commercially-delivered global warship

solutions.

Suppliers must submit their PQQ responses by 29 January 2024.
