Lloyds Banking : Chocolate manufacturer secures 3.5m investment

Birmingham-based chocolate manufacturer Walkers Chocolates has secured 3.5m of funding to help boost its manufacturing capacity over the next year.

The investment from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking will be used to buy new machinery in a bid to grow capacity on site by 40% for the manufacturers key trading periods, including Easter and Christmas.

Walkers said the funding would boost its annual turnover by an additional 2m in the next 12 months and planned to expand its already 300-strong team to help support the companys growth. Money will also be spent on new product development, including research into assorted chocolate boxes.

Sterling rose further on Wednesday as traders welcomed Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement that she would begin cross-party talks with the opposition Labour party as a signal that Britain will end up with “softer” exit from the European Union.

The pound gained 0.3 percent in early London trading to $1.3187, its highest since March 28.

The latest Lloyds Bank Business Barometer shows:

Overall business confidence1 increased by six points in March to 10%, but remains below the long-term average of 24%2.
Firms in ten of the twelve UK regions saw confidence bounce, with the biggest increase in Yorkshire and The Humber (21 points up at 21%). Businesses in Scotland and the East of England saw decreases, both falling eight points to -3% and -2% respectively.
Retail sector confidence reached a four-month high at 22%, while services continued to lag behind despite increasing 11 points to 7%.
While 20% of firms have delayed debt refinancing due to uncertainty, 62% said they would continue operating as usual in a ‘no deal’ scenario when asked between 1 and 15 March.

The Pound remains the best performing currency in the G10 universe for 2019 but the British currency has much further to rise, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley, who've recently told clients to buy the British currency.

Morgan Stanley forecasts double digit upside from Thursday's level for the Pound-to-Dollar rate before the year is out and around a 3% increase for the Pound-to-Euro rate, the latter of which has already risen 5.4% thus far in 2019.
