Lloyds shares are at the day's low as we head into the close on growing worries about the state of the global economy, and the UK in particular.

Everyone from the OECD to the World Bank to the British Chambers of Commerce seem to be coming to the same conclusion, that growth will falter amid rising inflation and interest rate increases

Weakest rise in residential work for two years holds back construction sector during May

May PMI® data signalled another growth slowdown in the construction sector amid a considerable loss of momentum for the residential category. The latest rise in housing activity was the weakest since the recovery began two years ago. Survey respondents suggested the subdued consumer confidence and worries about the economic outlook had constrained demand.
Higher borrowing costs and intense inflationary pressures were also cited as factors likely to hold back growth over the next 12 months. The latest survey data indicated that business activity expectations at construction companies were the least upbeat since August 2020.
The headline S&P Global / CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®) – which measures month-on-month changes in total industry activity – registered 56.4 in May, down from 58.2 in April and the lowest reading for four months.
Weaker trends in the house building sub-sector were the main brake on growth, with this index falling to 50.7 from 53.8 in April. Moreover, the latest reading signalled the worst performance for residential work since May 2020.

On Tuesday afternoon, Osirium Technologies confirmed to investors that all resolutions had been duly passed on a poll vote at the Company’s Annual General Meeting held that morning.

Shares in Osirium have risen in recent days after the company announced its first standalone Privileged Endpoint

Management (PEM) contract with an international imaging brand. The three-year contract will see the PEM rolled out to 500 users across the client’s UK operations.

Last week’s news follows the company’s announcement back on 24 March 2022 about the group’s first PPA-led deal with the Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit.

“With a view to capitalising on this need for greater cybersecurity protection, we are having many more conversations with existing PAM customers and new opportunities around endpoint management, as well as process automation,” Osirium told investors last week.

OECD predicts zero growth for UK next year

Britain will be the worst performing major economy next year apart from sanctions-hit Russia, according to the latest report from the OECD thinktank.

The UK will grow by 3.6% this year but will see zero growth next year. Only six months ago, the thinktank was forecasting 4.7% growth for the UK this year and 2.1% in 2023.

Meanwhile inflation is expected to average 8.8% this year, peaking at 10%, and falling to a still high 7.4% in 2023.

The OECD said the UK was being hit by a combination of higher interest rates, higher taxes, reduced trade and rising energy prices.

It said the invasion of Ukraine immediately slowed the world's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and set the global economy on a course of lower growth and rising inflation.

Overall it expects global growth to decelerate sharply to around 3% this year and 2.8% in 2023, well below the 4.5% and 3.2% respectively projected in the previous Economic Outlook last December.

World Bank slashes global growth forecast to 2.9%, warns of 'stagflation' risk

June 7 (Reuters) - The World Bank on Tuesday slashed its global growth forecast by nearly a third to 2.9% for 2022, warning that Russia's invasion of Ukraine has compounded the damage from the COVID-19 pandemic, and many countries now faced recession.

The war in Ukraine had magnified the slowdown in the global economy, which was now entering what could become "a protracted period of feeble growth and elevated inflation," the World Bank said in its Global Economic Prospects report, warning that the outlook could still grow worse.

Holland-Kaye said ministers could help by further relaxing rules on security background checks for new staff, and that employers should have access to HM Revenue & Customs records to check candidates’ employment backgrounds.

“They could give us access to data in an instant and get people to work two months faster, that would make a huge difference,” he said.

“The average cost of buying a home in the UK is up 1%, or £2,857, on last month, and has now risen for eleven consecutive months. Annual growth also remains in double-digits, at 10.5%, although this is the slowest rate of growth seen since the start of the year.

“The average cost to buy a home in the UK is now £289,099, hitting yet another record high. Despite the very real cost of living pressures some people are experiencing, the imbalance between supply and demand for properties remains the primary reason driving the continued climb in house prices.

Lloyds is 'top pick' for Citigroup as the market returned to a more positive stance on the sector after a hiatus in March and April.

Following this lull, the Citi team noted that there had been a return to consensus earnings per share upgrades for banks in May.

"This followed a strong set of 1Q22 results, with banks beating on revenues and revising NIM guidance higher, which reinforces our belief that earnings upgrades will continue to drive relative outperformance," Citi's banking analysts said.

Lenders' capital levels were cited as the "one weak point" in the sector's recent first-quarter results, but capital return plans were "largely reiterated or even enhanced".

Lloyds and UBS are two shares where Citi said it was most above consensus, with the pair being among its three favourites, alongside Spain's Caixabank
