Barclays profits slumped 24% in the first half after a costly trading error in the US and a charge to cover loan losses during the cost of living crisis hit the lender's books.

The FTSE 100 (^FTSE) bank reported a pre-tax profit of £3.7bn ($4.5bn) in the first six months of 2022. That was down from £4.9bn a year ago. Analysts had expected Barclays to report a second quarter pre-tax profit of £3.9bn

FTSE 100 expected to make a strong start to trading on Thursday after a positive finish to trading in the US following the Federal Reserve’s widely expected decision to raise interest rates by 75 basis points.

Spread betting companies are calling the FTSE 100 around 40 points higher in early trading.

Fed Hikes Interest Rates by 75 Basis Points

FTSE 100 advanced to session highs with the lead index up 42.81% to 7,349.09 and the broader FTSE 250 index up 81.85 points to 19,650.64.

Sentiment was given a lift by positive corporate updates and a likely positive restart on Wall Street later today.

The focus now shifts to the FOMC meeting and its accompanying statement due at 2.15pm today.

UBS said it expects the Federal Reserve to deliver another 75bps rate increase, bringing the federal funds target rate to 2.25–2.5%. It said markets will be scrutinizing the messaging at Fed chairman Jerome Powell’s press conference.

The IMF have reiterated the looming economic crisis that faces the world, The UK is set for the slowest growth of the G7 richest economies It is predicting UK growth will fall to just 0.5% in 2023, much lower than its forecast in April of 1.2%.

Heathrow’s chief executive has lambasted Ryanair after the airline accused airports of not recruiting enough ground handling staff ahead of the peak season.

John Holland-Kaye deemed the comments made yesterday by the airline’s chief financial officer Neil Sorahan as “ridiculous.”

“Ground handling is the responsibility of the airline,” the airport’s boss told the PA news agency. “So that’s like them blaming us because they haven’t got enough pilots.

“They need to take responsibility for their ground handling.”

Holland-Kaye’s remarks have come after Sorahan told the BBC’s Today programme that airlines had “one job to do.”

Airport and airline bosses have clashed in recent weeks over lengthy queues and last-minute delays to Brits’ holidays abroad.

In a half-year report, Heathrow airport said it had been raising concerns over low handler numbers for nine months, after airlines slashed staff levels amid Covid lockdowns.

The airport estimated that airline ground handlers have no more than 70 per cent of pre-pandemic resources. There also had been “no increase” in numbers since January, it outlined on Tuesday morning.
