Chinese Exports of Rare Earth Minerals Drop Like a Rock Amid Escalating Trade War With US

Officials from the Pentagon and the US Department of Commerce indicated that they were looking to make deals with other rare earth producers worldwide in a bid to reduce the US reliance on Chinese supplies of the strategic minerals.

The Pentagon indicated that it was engaged in talks with several rare earth miners around the world, including Malawi's Mkango Resources Ltd and Burundi's Rainbow Rare Earth Ltd, in a bid to reduce reliance on Chinese supplies. Also last week, the Department of Commerce outlined a host of measures aimed at reducing the US' "strategic vulnerabilities" caused by its dependence on imports from China.

Rising trade tensions between the U.S. and China have sparked worries about the 17 exotic-sounding rare earth minerals needed for high-tech products like robotics, drones and electric cars.

China recently raised tariffs to 25% on rare earth exports to the U.S. and has threatened to halt exports altogether after the Trump administration raised tariffs on Chinese products and blacklisted telecommunications giant Huawei.
