Scottish Widows says it plans to invest up to £25bn by 2025 in companies which are pro-actively tackling climate change.
The pension provider said the total would include investing at least £1bn in firms developing climate solutions, such as alternative green energy, sustainable agriculture, and pollution prevention.

Scottish Widows has already targeted halving the carbon footprint of its investment portfolios by 2030, and aims to reach net zero across the entirety its investments by 2050.

Head of pension investments and responsible investments Maria Nazarova-Doyle said: "Today we're announcing another major milestone in our journey to net zero by committing to invest at least £20-£25bn by 2025, in companies that are pro-actively adapting their businesses to be less carbon-intensive or are developing climate solutions.

"At least £1bn of that figure will be invested to fund companies developing new, sustainable ways of living and working. This huge new investment starts today and will accelerate and grow rapidly over the next four years."

Several weeks after the launch of Shanghai’s much-applauded compulsory waste sorting initiative, the eco-friendly policy has seen a not-so-green result, with a surge in plastic consumption that has left manufacturers struggling to keep up.
Sales of plastic bags and bins designed for specific types of rubbish have soared, while manufacturers in China’s plastics producing hub, in neighbouring Zhejiang province, are working day and night to meet demand.
While some industry insiders see this as a short-term impact of the new waste policy, others expect it to last for some time, due to the central government’s intention to extend waste classification to more than 40 major cities across the country.

Powerhouse Energy Group PLC, up 28% at 5.65 pence, 12-month range 5.20p - 6.40p. The technology company commercialising hydrogen production from waste plastic says its development partner Hydrogen Utopia International PLC has signed a framework agreement with Linde PLC's Engineering unit. The framework agreement provides Linde Engineering with a five year exclusivity to supply Hydrogen Utopia in its development of Powerhouse DMG technology particularly in Poland, Hungary and Greece. The Powerhouse DMG process can generate up to 2 tonnes of road-fuel hydrogen and more than 58 megawatt hours of exportable electricity per day. The project, if completed, is expected to contain ten DMG units in one geographical area.
