The BMJ have got involved...
https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/01/12/covid-19-government-must-urgently-rethink-lateral-flow-test-roll-out/
England is about to start testing people without symptoms using cheap lateral flow tests which don’t detect Covid without symptoms, instead of PCR testing like Novacyt, which does. It doesn’t make sense. These lateral flow tests which are going are going to be rolled out for everyone in England not showing symptoms when the se lateral flow tests are the ones that will always show people without symptoms as negative, even though they may be asymptotic and carriers.. It just sends more carriers back into the community. They only test positive when symptoms are displayed. It doesn’t make sense at all. In fact it is sheer madness but no doubt they will order Novacyt tests when it all fails miserably - which it will. There are many scientists voicing concerns about lateral flow testing, this is just one of them. January 10, 2021 - expert reaction to government announcement that asymptomatic testing is to be rolled out across country starting next week The government has announced today that community testing offer is to be expanded across all local authorities in England to test people without symptoms. Dr Angela Raffle, Consultant in Public Health and Honorary Senior Lecturer University of Bristol Medical School; Population Health Sciences, said: “The news of further rollout of lateral flow testing is very worrying. Any benefit from finding symptomless cases will be outweighed by the many more infectious cases that are missed by these tests. Already outbreaks are known to have occurred because people have been falsely reassured by a negative lateral flow result, leading them to attend work whilst having symptoms. The test manufacturers only recommend the Innova lateral flow test for use by qualified medical practitioners and in people with symptoms, yet the Department of Health and Social Care is pushing ahead with use in symptomless people, with the test performed by untrained staff or as a self test. This makes an important difference to the reliability. We know from testing at Birmingham University that the test may pick up as few as 2 in every 100 cases that would be positive on PCR testing, and in Liverpool it picked up no more than 40 out of every 100. For the Government to claim that these tests are accurate, reliable and ‘hugely successful’ is dangerously misleading. It could undermine the already struggling test and trace system, because people are likely to choose to get a lateral flow test rather than attending for PCR when they have symptoms.”

I just read that they are advising people with allergies not to have the vaccine for the moment as two NHS workers have had a severe reaction. I’m not an anti vaxer by any stretch of the imagination - bring it on - but 1 in 3 have allergies...nut, gluten, lactose, hay fever, my husband is allergic to shellfish...this is a very big chunk of the population, see below. If this is the case testing will need to be done for years until a vaccine is tweaked.
“In the UK about one in three people have an allergic disease. Allergies are the most common chronic disorder in children; 6-8% of children up to the age of three years have a food allergy and it is estimated that one in 1,333 of the population in England has experienced anaphylaxis at some point in their lives. 24 Jun 2019”
They are recommending pregnant women, or those that are considering getting pregnant within 3 months, don’t have the vaccines...that’s 5-10% of the population. How are they going to protect themselves?

Hi Intrepid
My daughter in law is an ICU Staff Nurse so woks directly with the Covid patients on ventilators. The vulnerable group in the age range is anyone over 50 so you would be locking down a lot of the workforce and not allowing anyone over 50 to see their children or grandchildren. Fit and well over 50’s get it too. It would be impossible to segregate or police.
My take on it will be that Novacyt tests will be around.....forever. Even if a vaccine gets approved no one knows how long immunisation lasts. It could be weeks, it could be months or longer. Who knows, only time will tell if we are all eventually inoculated, which will be several years at a guess.. I wouldn’t want to fly being cooped up in a small box with lots of people, not knowing if their inoculation has worn off. I think all the airlines will demand that everyone is able to produce a recent certified PCR negative result before allowing them to fly. In restaurants etc too. They won’t rely on these fast nasal and throat swabs which often can’t detect the virus in the early stages before symptoms show which means people can still be be carriers. Novacyt tests are 100% accurate so will be needed....forever.
....to monitor for long term side effects. Isn’t it all a bit rushed?

Watched with interest. Testing is obviously going to have to be around for a very long time. All 3 on the podiums today haven’t been supplied with ANY research data from Pfizer yet, just the press release. Phase I of the vaccine, IF the vaccine is passed, will only be given to the severely poorly ie cancer patients etc and the over 60’s . Phase 2 is for the under 60’s. When Jonathan Van-Tam was pressed by one of the journalists as to when Phase 2 would start, he couldn’t answer but not in the foreseeable future. Will Phase 1 be the long term human trial?! This means anyone under 60, primarily our UK workforce and student population, will have to carry on having to wander about with masks and social distancing , no different to now, and, I have no doubt, we will have many more periodic lockdowns whilst everyone under 60 will need to continue to be tested.
People seem to be forgetting that the Covid vaccine has not had approval. The statement from Pfizer is one of their own press releases. What they haven’t said are the age group percentages of those given the vaccine....were they 90% fit and well volunteers....what age groups were the 10% failures?, what the most severe side effects were (and there were side effects), is the 90% success rate quelling existing symptoms or stopping them appearing. Apparently it can’t be given to those with already inhibited immune systems as the vaccine quells the immune system....does this mean that it would make us all more susceptible to other viruses, like the common cold? There are too many unanswered questions. I think they are way off giving it to the masses until the long term side effects are known, and that takes time. Trials 1 normally take around 1 year, Trials II around 1-2 years, Trials 3 around 4 years, and Trials 4 around 4+ years. This is the length of time to show side effects. How can these be determined after 6 months.? And why were Boris and Matt Han**** so glum yesterday in the press conference? I’ve never seen Boris so pessimistic. He is normally punching the air on good news....mighty peculiar for him. I’m a holder in NCYT and I of course really really hope that we eventually find a vaccine but I personally can’t see a vaccine being given approval without the long term side effects of it being known. I’m not selling as I think there will need to be testing around for a very very long time and as it is realised that quick swabs can give false negatives and false positives , the former which will continue the spread and the latter keeping people from work needlessly which yet further stalls the economy , then all, not some, will be coming to to NCYT where the tests are 100% accurate.
