In some case obvioulsy is does not affect the price and does as the defenders say and " creates liquidity ! However whether it does or does not is in my view irelevant! the point is that without a change in disclosure rules the fact that shorting is legal allows for a defacto form of " insider trading " which should be banned. Even the liquidity argument is flawed in my view, if a stock is so popular that the holders do not want to sell the simple solution is raise the price until either the buyer no longer wants them or the seller is willing to give them up !!! ITs not compliacted.

clintek if your gonna be arrogant tis preferable that you be right usually. Well first on purely linguistic basis, short selling is actually selling as you said in your little speach. Yes the share from the more common type of shorting are borrowed at a fee from a ( usually) large holder, then sold as you say betting that the sp will fall. The other kind of short selling is naked short selling and THIS kind of short selling does not require a loan and in some cases in the past the amount of shares sold has exceeded the shares in issue !!!
The problem i have always had with it is simple, the loan-er of the stock if they wanted for eg to add to their holding could loan shares for free they would then have " inside knowledge" that a large number of shares were about to be sold ( very soon) they could assist this surpession of the sp by a sale of their own whilst all the time their motive was a lower buy in/buy back price of a stock they want a larger possition in, could be is enough btw or should be .
By any measure the nature of shorting means knowledge that affects or could affect the sp is in the hands of one person/s and not the market in general and should but does not come under the umbrella of insider trading... "Oh dear, fancy chastising people for not knowing the basics."

dyofr .... black out my choice of terminology..... We had lse totally down halifax on nt buy or sell for hours,and ajbell also being contrary to say the least. LSE went down @ about 7;50 and im not suggesting the bigs had anything to do with that ( lol no tin hat here ) but the bigs certainly responded very fast and in a big way to wipe 12% off the sp in about half an hour i believe. A lot was clawed back but the momentum was stolen and the MM's regained the grip they had well and truly lost until then.
Now we have order filling walkdowns and tree shakes and all the sneaky tricks of the trade ( not ilegal just greedy lets say :)
) It was just th timing could not have been worse but thems the breaks :) gla

There is this notion/term bandied about re reserve estimate value etc . In this world conservative can mean 8/9% of the laypersons simple maths ie amount found x area ! This is right and correct because sampling can be erratic. Thing is though even with very very “ conservative” estimate etc we still have monumental resources in ground AND most buy out valuations muted ( the realistic ones lol ) are talking about 5% of estimated resources in ground which is again the “ conservative” figures !!! So in effect a multi billion ( say 5 bil ) buyout would equate to aprox 3/5% of the 8/9 % conservative resource ! So whilst nothing is certain any buyer who has done due dil will know with a very large degree of certainty that the acquisition has only to deliver 3% of its potential to make it profitable !! It’s as close to a given as the mining world has to offer ( imho )wtfdik bla bla bla gla
