your numbers are dramatically wrong: oil in 1970 was US$3.bbl...you are muddling real 2010 prices with money of the day ...more glaringly, you have not answered yr own q... ...no country (that I know of) adopts the gold standard...so every country's leaders agree with me...fiat is best ...you are also providing some interesting snippets relating to different issue: is gold a decent hedge against mayhem?...yes...a little...I'd just get my capital out and into a flat in zone 1 lol ,,,so in countries with weak human rights/property rights, a modest holding of gold against apocalypse makes sense ...as more countries progress into the sunlit uplands of liberal democracy, the nervous need for gold is lessened ...so the LT prospects for gold are poor ...QED
