The Barda Rash oilfield, some 55 km northwest of Erbil, holds gross recoverable resources of 506 million barrels of light oil and 964 million barrels of heavy oil.
Three wells have been drilled on the field, all of which encountered oil, with the main reservoir targets being the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic sequences. Afren plans a phased development of the field with production start-up scheduled for early next year, delivering 15,000 bpd gross by end 2012, ramping up to 125,000 bpd by 2017 (or 75,000 bpd net to Afren within five years). This would develop the light oil reserves, with the company then turning its attention to the 964 million barrels of recoverable heavier oil.
The Ain Sifni PSC, operated by Hunt Oil, lies 70 km northwest of Erbil. An exploration well, Jebel Simrit-2, is expected to spud in Q4 2011 to follow-up the JS-1 discovery well of 2010, which logged substantial continuous oil pay in Cretaceous and Jurassic reservoirs but failed to reach the Triassic reservoir targets.
