Hi All. Philip I've asked that question quite a lot and I think Fergal Lynch gave me the best answer when we were playing golf one day with Kevin Ryan. Fergal says sometimes it pays to take the shortest route on the rails especially with tracks like York and Haydock where horses tend to run up the middle on the home straight. Also if your drawn low on the rails and horses break faster from higher draws come across you there's nothing you can do. Similar replies from Mark Birch John Carrol Garry Carter and Robert Winston I use to get annoyed if my horses were stuck in that position but they all came up with similar answers. When I moved to NH never had reasons to query there positions as its different with NH racing and if you watch Paddy Brennan he rides where he thinks the ground is best for the horse he's riding. Hope that helps!
