I learnt a very long time ago not to rely on the Government/ Society to determine how I live. Anyone who does, is in deep pooh. Not because Society, if there is such a thing doesn’t care, it’s just there are too many of us for it to make much of a difference on the micro level. If I am not happy with something eg a job I move on. It’s not the Governments fault that someone may be having a crap life. Obviously if someone is physically incapable of looking after themselves then Society should quite rightly help out. Likewise if some one finds themselves in a position beyond their control eg redundancy, then yes,the State should help in these circumstances on a short term basis. For able bodied persons you should determine your own destiny and not rely on others. If others are doing well in Society then we should congratulate them and try and learn the secret of their success, not deride them as a bunch of greedy fookers.

Possibly. I have looked everywhere and could not find any reason for the drop yesterday. Direct line results were announced yesterday and they were a mixed bag. However as they are now independent of RBS don’t think they were the reason.

The share goes ex div on the 21 st of March so will pay out 11 p per share. On the 22 nd of March the share price should drop 11p to reflect this. It shows a drop of only 1.5 p so probably a load of old baloney.

I have not invested for a while LennyMac. I was in at the Brexit vote so my investment dropped £150k. I had to wait a while until I broke even and then some, to make a decent return. As the good Lord says,all comes to those who wait. I then put my money in to 12 month bonds to resist temptation and a divorce!. Bonds were up in December, so cashed in and managed to get in to RBS at £2.1 and got out again at £2.31. Back in at the moment with a higher number at £2.40 with an exit price of £2.51 to give a 2 month profit of £55k if it all goes to plan. Will wait and see what happens next week, though my nearest and dearest now wants to stay in them long term for the dividends. You can’t win sometimes.

As I posted yesterday. Good results and the share price goes down. Can only assume it’s down to the Chairman’s comments re Brexit uncertainty.

What date will the RBS final dividend and special dividend be paid

If it behaves as normal good results usually means the share price goes down. Bad results and the share price goes up. Never understood this

Hi Bigmac. To keep the maths simple. Say your �1000 bought you 3000 shares at the time. RBS were concerned that the share price was being manipulated by fairly small trades so they consolidated in to a 1 for 10. So you would now have 300 shares which would be worth 10 times what they were worth before. So you were no worse off. So when a dividend is declared of say 2p per share, if you still own the shares on a certain date after the declaration you will be entitled to the dividend. Using the above example you now own 300 shares at 2p per share which will give you a dividend of �6. In simple terms your income has increased by �6 but the total value of your shares falls by a similar amount so you are no better off.

One of the main factors affecting the share price is the poor performance of the investment bank. Fortunately that appears to be down to market forces rather than anything Barclays have done. Personally I don�t have a problem that there is an investment bank. The ordinary banking sector is saturated so there will be limited prospects for growth. So the best returns are going to come from areas other U.K. banks fear to tread. The more banks that abandon IB the less the competition. PI is going to disappear soon and we appear to have avoided the FCA saying the banks must tell the customer that they had PI rather than wait for the customer to enquire , so it could have been a lot worse. The US fine will probably be settled at under �3 billion so not as-exposed as RBS and easily affordable. So that only leaves Brexit. A hard Brexit and this share could go anywhere in 2018, a soft Brexit and a bit of good news on the IB side and we could see �3 next year If that is the case I will be left kicking myself that I bailed out too early.!

Thanks Mr Wolf. We are all different of course but I never rely on the technical stuff. I stick to either Barclays or RBS as they both are subject to massive swings. I tend to buy large numbers when the share price is on the way down and then hold until they make me around �50k a deal. ( roughly a 10% swing). Pre Brexit I seemed to judge things better and had 15 successive deals , down mostly to luck at getting the timing right. Often I trade in and out within a few weeks but recently taking longer. I broke my golden rule last time out and switched from Barclays to RBS after Staley's dividend announcement and then had to wait ages to make a small gain on RBS. Back in to Barclays at �1.90 at the moment hoping to see �2.10 before bailing out.I tTought we were heading that way pre results but not to be. I think this share will come good but I will not be hanging around once the share hits �2.10.

I think you are getting mixed up Juvettetrader. Your looking at the 9 month figures, year to date. It actually made a profit in the last 3 months which has reduced the loss year to date. These losses are to do with the restructuring costs that were incurred earlier this year. They have said there will be no more restructuring costs. They have also announced there will be an important announcement for shareholder improvement with the full results when they are released next year. So not as bad as you are making out.

My two teams, Man City and Stockport County are having mixed fortunes at the moment.The term Typical City is still alive and kicking,so much so,I have put a big bet on United at 7/2 to win the league. My other team County are at home to FC United in the F.A Cup on Saturday so going along to that to cheer them on. As regards the other posters comments re Barclays & RBS these shares do take you to Hell and back, particularly now Vince Cable is back on the scene to stick his two penneth in when ever there is a bit of bad news. They are however so volatile there is big money to be made or lost. The secret is don't bet your mortgage, don't be greedy and hope Lady Luck is on your side as regards timing. I am just looking forward to a break from the ups and downs, which have been mainly down over the last 18 months. Looks like a rocky ride going forward with more bank scandals to be revealed , the US fine still unresolved. PPI going on for far too long, the EU punishing us for leaving, Rocket Man launching well.. his Rockets and Trump wanting to make an example of him. Happy Days.

Hi Traveller. It has certainly been an interesting 18 months. I broke my golden rule and basically swapped 250000 Barclays Shares for 170000 RBS ones soon after Barclays announced a dividend cut. They then went in opposite directions and I would have made a fortune had I stuck with Barclays. Ironically things have now changed and it appears to be Barclays on the slide. There are so many uncertainties going on I decided to bale out of RBS with a small profit. If I go back in it will be to trade with large numbers on swings of 10- 15p rather than wait for an upswing of �1.10 on the share price which I have had to do this time just to hit break even. I keep popping on to the site from time to time and it is a shame some of the old posters are not on nowadays. I particularly miss the banter with Jings.

Hi All. Sold my holding today at �2.7 which covered past losses and the interest I would have earned. Glad to be out as I was �187,500 down shortly after Brexit when the share fell to �1.60. I will monitor it and if it falls by 20p I may consider getting back in. This share has been a roller coaster ride for the last 18 months and is not for the faint hearted. Good Luck all and ATB.

There are some posters on this site who quite frankly talk through their botty. Before you suggest the company is about to go bankrupt, may I suggest you undertake a basic course in Accounts . If you look at the balance sheet, if you understand Financial Statements, you will see this company has healthy reserves which can handle any fines etc which are in the pipeline. Me thinks, some of the recent posters on here, have a hidden agenda or an old score to settle against this company.

Yes good results. I was semi expecting it to drop as this is what usually happens. Hopefully it will hit my break even point of £2.68 soon and then onwards and upwards to my exit price of £3.00. I have been in this share far to long for comfort and it doesn't seem that long ago it was in the £1.50's and I was sitting on a huge loss
