LONDON (Dow Jones)--Professional services company Management Consulting Group PLC (MMC.LN) Friday said it agreed to raise GBP25 million in a share sale to trim its debts and ensure it doesn't breach the terms of its loans if trading gets worse. Management Consulting Group said cutting its debts will enable it to focus on growth initiatives following a period of tough trading, when public and private sector customers cut back spending on management consulting services. The company said there are signs of improving demand for its services and it has identified an increasing number of "client opportunities," although didn't elaborate. It isn't planning on making any acquisitions, it added. Management Consulting Group said it agreed to sell about 113.7 million shares at 22 pence a share, a 14% discount to its stock's closing price Thursday. BlueGem Capital Partners, a private equity company run by former Merrill Lynch bankers Marco Capello and Emilio Di Spiezio Sardo, has agreed to buy 77.3 million of the shares on offer, giving it a major stake in the firm. Both Capello and Sardo will join the board, Management Consulting Group said. BlueGem will also receive warrants for another 36.1 million shares. Management Consulting Group's largest shareholder, Gartmore, and company directors are also participating in the share sale. The London-based group, which has a focus on South Africa, said total life insurance sales were GBP397 million, up from GBP307 million a year earlier on an annual premium equivalent, or APE, basis. APE counts 100% of regular premium sales and 10% of the money earned from selling single-premium products. The sales were in line with the GBP397 million average expected by 10 analysts. "The group delivered an excellent underlying sales performance during the first quarter, showing a marked improvement on the equivalent period last year and continuing the good recovery that began in the second half of 2009," Group Chief Executive Officer Julian Roberts said. "We have created a firm foundation upon which our long-term savings businesses are beginning to deliver the strategic targets on cost savings and return on equity which we set out in our preliminary announcement in March. "Cost reduction programs are already underway across our long-term savings division and we continue to enhance our sales and distribution mechanisms," Roberts said. On its other businesses, it said unit-trust sales in the first three months rose 51% to GBP2.2 billion from GBP1.46 billion in the same period a year earlier. LONDON (Dow Jones)--Car dealer Inchcape PLC (INCH.LN) Thursday said first-quarter revenue increased 13% on year after new car sales were stronger than expected in some of its markets and used car margins held up well. However, the firm said it was cautious about the rest of 2010 as it expects demand for new cars to be lower on year in several key markets and doesn't expect any sustained recovery in the global car market until well into the second half of 2010. Inchcape said it performed well in markets like Australia, the U.K. and some parts of continental Europe. However, demand for new vehicles was significantly below last year in Eastern Europe and Russia while in Asia it faced challenging markets, it said. This new facility will come into effect by 15 August 2010 at which time it will replace the Group's existing facilities.
