The MF Hydra is world’s the first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, and it is now officially in service. According to a press release by Norwegian business Norled firm on Friday, the Norwegian Maritime Authority gave the MF Hydra permission to sail.
“After a lot of development and testing, we are now looking forward to welcoming passengers on board for a zero-emission journey between Hjelmeland and Nesvik,” said Erlend Hovland, Chief Technology Officer of Norled.
The MF Hydra is an 82.4-meter vessel that was delivered in 2021 and has a capacity of 300 passengers and 80 vehicles. The ferry generates a speed of 9 knots with its two 200 kW fuel cells, two 440 kW generators, and two Shottel thrusters.
