Nova Innovation has received funding that could deliver the first tidal turbine group in Indonesia.
Innovate UK has awarded £ 200,000 of the Larantuka and Indonesian Tidal Energy (FLITE) Nova Feasibility Project, which aims to complete a feasibility study for a 7 MW tidal field on Larantuka Straits.
This lies between the islands of Flores and Adonara and has one of the strongest tidal currents in Indonesia. The facility would use Nova's next-generation 100 kW tidal turbines, which have been providing electricity to households and businesses in Shetland since 2016.
FLITE is the first Asian project from Scotland-based Nova Innovation, which has partnered with Indonesian University Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) to deliver the work.
Simon Forrest, CEO of Nova Innovation, said, “Our goal is to stimulate the development of the tidal current as a sustainable and abundant source of energy for countries around the world.
“Indonesia is blessed with vast tidal energy resources that can be used to generate clean, predictable and sustainable energy for the country.
"By working closely with our Indonesian partners, we will accelerate the use of this untapped resource, which Indonesia can supply with energy for future generations."
With more than 270 million inhabitants and 17,500 islands, Indonesia is one of the largest countries in the world. The country's power grid is currently dominated by fossil fuels - coal, gas, and oil - which together accounted for 83% of electricity generation in 2020.
However, the Indonesian government is committed to increasing renewable energy production by 2030, and the country's tidal energy resources offer the perfect opportunity to decarbonise its economy.
Nova will work with ITS to conduct on-site technical and socio-economic research to support the business case for the tidal field.
Bambang Pramujati, ITS Vice Rector, said: “The electricity system in this region has to deal with a variety of geographic factors, an uneven population distribution and an uneven distribution of energy needs.
"The joint research between ITS and Nova Innovation will provide a feasibility study for a tidal energy plant in the Larantuka Strait with the aim of answering economic and technical feasibility questions and instilling confidence in investors."
Nova Innovation met with members of the Indonesian delegation at COP26 in Glasgow to discuss the potential for tidal energy in the country.
UK Export Secretary Mike Freer said: “COP26 has shown all of us how exciting initiatives like this one can help Britain - and the planet - get greener again.
"Clean growth is at the heart of our trade policy, and the deals we negotiate around the world will encourage green exports and investment, create jobs, and combat the threat of climate change."GOVERNMENT GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR A BLUE ENERGY TRANSITION
