By Zuena Msuya Mtwara The Minister of Energy, Dr. Medard Kalemani has launched the use of natural gas in vehicles (CNG) of Dangote cement factory company in its journeys instead of using fuel. Dr. Kalemani made the inauguration during his working visit to Mtwara Region to visit the Dangote Factory, inspect the Mtwara Electric Cooling Station and visit the Ntorya Natural Gas Well held on March 5, 2021. He said the factory planned to connect a total of 600 vehicles using natural gas, whereas in the first phase they have already connected 250 vehicles, in the second phase they will connect 350 vehicles. However Dr. Kalemani advised the management of the factory to merge all of its 1000 vehicles using natural gas in its journeys instead of oil. The natural gas processing project at the Dangote plant has cost 21 billion Tanzanian shillings, from the initial stages to its completion. "Gas consumption is cheaper and reduces about 45% of operating costs compared to fuel, it is also non-explosive and environmentally friendly, I urge all motorists, motorcycles, Bajajis and all fire engines to use natural gas in its operation," said Dr. Kalemani. He also said that the use of natural gas in the country, has not yet reached one percent of all gas discovered in the country despite 60% of electricity used in the country due to the gas with more than 57 trillion cubic feet so far.
