Aus, economies of scale suggest BT will be able to purchase Equipment, Fibre and everything else cheaper than the Altnets. CityFibre have decided to go XGS-PON, partly for marketing purposes and primarily to support more customers per OLT; BT have decided to use GPON, since 99 percent of home users don't need XG-PON and less need XGS-PON. Most users, me included, are doing just fine with 35mb download and 5mb upload using FTTC, so the only reason I can think of for XGS-PON is as I've already stated, to increase customer count per OLT. A nominal useful speed for home use will probably be around 100mb/s, for most, with very few needing more for the foreseeable future, so anyone paying extra for more are simply throwing their money away; The winners will be the cheapest and most reliable providers, with speeds of around the 100mb/s to 150mb/s in my opinion. As far as online gamers are concerned, latency is most important and with the move to cloud it'll be the fastest core networks that'll matter, so distance to gaming server and number of hops will be important. Once BT have completed their Fibre rollout, their CAPEX will fall of a cliff and the cost savings from convergence, building closures, and staff reductions, will also show through on the bottom line, so at that point who do you think will be able to offer the cheapest service, BT or the Altnets? My money's on BT. Currently BT are constrained by OFCOM, look at the controversy over Equinox 2, but once the Fibre rollouts are complete and BT is no longer shackled, they'll be free to truly compete on price, lets see how the Altnets cope with that with many are already struggling.
