The successful entry of Enagás in Moroccan soil by the hand of the former minister has suggested that he could aspire to compete for the concession of the Europe-Maghreb gas pipeline
Last June, Enagás and Elecnor won a contract for the construction of a gas pipeline in Morocco. The work is subordinated to the progress of Sound Energy in the gas drilling of Tendrara, in the east of the country, on the Algerian border. This small milestone for Spanish listed companies was entrusted to Miguel Angel Moratinos, former Foreign Minister from 2004 to 2010, who, according to official sources, advises the Spanish consortium as a strategic consultant.
In recent years, the socialist politician channeled his private activity through the consulting firm ICP. Its vast diplomatic experience is the key to offering Spanish and foreign multinationals the generation of activities in new markets, like Enagás, a company determined to continue its expansion beyond the Spanish borders. And this contract is a test of decisive to enter the neighboring country, as evidenced by the fact that it is his own CEO, Marcelino Oreja, who manages this contract.
According to well-informed sources of the process, Moratinos' intervention was essential to obtain the approval of the Moroccan Minister of Energy, thus imposing other consortia of French capital. The Enagás and Elecnor contract, conditional on the success of drilling, includes the construction and maintenance for 15 years of a 20-inch pipeline, 120 kilometers long, from Tendrara to Ain Benimathar, where it would connect to the Maghreb gas pipeline. -Europe from Algeria.
The importance of this contract lies in the fact that there are two Spanish companies competing for the gas business in Morocco. Naturgy has for years been a leading shareholder in Galp and the Kingdom of Morocco in the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline that crosses Moroccan soil and whose concession expires in 2021. This renewal forces Francisco Reynés to go to Rabat, after having been in Egypt and Algeria, where the Spanish energy company renewed its production and marketing rights in both countries.
Although these infrastructures are different, the successful entry of Enagás in the Moroccan territory by the hand of the former minister suggests that he could aspire to compete for the concession of the Europe-Maghreb gas pipeline that crosses Morocco, despite the fact that the rest of the pipeline from Algeria continues to be co-owned by Naturgy. The operator of the Spanish gas network, specialized in management, storage and transport, has been immersed in an internationalization process for years and has made Morocco one of its preferred objectives.
Before formalizing his work, Moratinos had traveled to countries such as Guinea, Angola, Cuba and Bolivia, accompanied by former executive colleagues such as Zapatero an
