CLP Continue to put the Territory Environment at Risk
28 March 2018
Minister for the Environment Lauren Moss today slammed the CLP for suggesting Government should rush its response to the Independent Scientific Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing in the Northern Territory.
She said the irresponsible calls from the CLP to rush to approve fracking would put the Territory environment at risk and showed they had learned nothing from their disastrous four years in Government.
The CLP have an appalling record of putting the Territory environment at risk, Ms Moss said.
Approving a Port without any environmental assessment, putting Darwin Harbour mangroves at risk and failing to allocate water in an open and accountable manner are just some of the reason Territorians dont trust the CLP to protect the environment.
Despite the CLP claiming their fracking regulations adequately protected the environment, the fact that the final report of the Inquiry clearly says the risk of fracking can only be reduced to acceptable levels if all 135 recommendations are enacted, shows the degree to which they put the Territory environment at risk.
Opposition Leader Gary Higgins Environment Minister under the former CLP Government should apologise for misleading Territorians that the fracking regulations he was responsible for were adequate.
The report proves he simply hasnt told the truth.
The Territory Labor Government will not be taking the CLPs advice, we will take as much time as we need to make the best decision for the Territory.
Its clear that the CLP havent listened and havent learnt from their time in Government and, given the chance, would once again risk serious damage to our valuable natural environment.
