Cath O'Niell, chief scientific officer at SkinBioTherapeutics and professor of translational dermatology at the University of Manchester, discusses her recent research on developing probiotics to treat psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases.

With new and emerging biologic therapies for psoriasis seemingly popping up daily, one research team is seeking a new route for treatment with the development of a probiotic specifically tailored for the inflammatory skin disease.

Cath O'Niell, chief scientific officer at SkinBioTherapeutics and professor of translational dermatology at the University of Manchester, sits down with Dermatology Times to discuss her latest research and how probiotics might be a new viable therapy for other inflammatory skin disease besides psoriasis.

'OptiBiotix results for six months ended 31 May 2019 are set out below. The results show revenue for the six months of £148,818 (2018: £80,560). These figures represent an almost doubling in revenues (1.8X) from H1 2018. '

I think 2018-19 were the transition years, from R &D to commercial. You can't build anything unless you have solid foundations and all the groundwork has been done. They have the science proven, regulatory done GRAS etc. manufacturing and scale-up on a global basis done.
Now we start to reap the rewards.

I think I know where you're' coming from Woolworth. You have to remember though that SOH and family have a large amount of skin in OPTI, so it's very much in their interest for the company to succeed. What did you think of the Pierce deal? The guys who run that company are no mugs.

Why's that? If you're building a company with a global reach, you have to travel the globe no?
There were some substantial one off expenses for regulatory approvals which were clearly highlighted.

But it was only a small amount sold, so not that big a miss. We were told that the sale was needed to speed up a manufacturing and supply agreement, an opportunity not to be missed apparently.

When OPTI sold 2% of SBTX around the middle of April, the sp was around 11-12p. Since then the SBTX sp has increased by about 80%, so in actual fact, what they sold to fulfill a material order has been more than offset by the c80% increase in their 33.3% remaining holding.

So maybe not as negative as you might think?

Scientists began to fear humans are unable to develop long-term immunity against the virus after recovered patients in South Korea, China and Japan tested positive for a second time – sometimes weeks after being discharged from hospital. I can't explain that. It was just to point out the thousands die every year from viruses, but they are not called pandemics. Something doesn't add up with all this. Why are the Nightingale Hospitals empty? It has to be a genetically engineered virus, that's why it's affecting certain people in different ways. The scientists will get to the bottom of it eventually. I just hope if they do find something sinister, doesn't lead us down a path of no return.

Ineffective flu jab blamed as extra winter deaths hit 40-year high

The number of winter deaths last year the hit highest level in more than 40 years after the failure of last year’s flu jab.

There were an estimated 50,100 EXCESS winter deaths in England and Wales in 2017/18 - the highest recorded since winter 1975/76, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

The number of excess winter deaths observed in 2017/18 was higher than all years since the 1975/76 winter period, when there were 58,100 extra deaths. The last peak was in 2014/15, when there were 43,850 excess deaths - which was the worst figure since the millennium.

Compared with recent years, excess winter deaths observed in 2017/18 were 45.1 per cent higher than the 2016/17 winter and more than double that seen in 2015/16.

Nick Stripe, head of health analysis and life events at the ONS, said: "The number of excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2017-2018 was the highest recorded since the winter of 1975-1976.
