The interim government has moved to implement the Teesta Mega Project with Chinese loans and a letter has already been sent to China requesting funding of Tk 67 billion (6,700 crore).

Following chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus' visit to China in March, momentum around the project has picked up.

According to policymakers, a financial agreement between the two countries could be signed before the end of this year.

Just read your post from earlier redeye,I think it’s as simple as that…who in their right mind would press the button on Teesta and it’s massive associated development without a guarantee of energy,and reliability too?…..are there any power stations up there?….it’s a bloody long way to move fuels up there,even getting a transmission infrastructure that distance…so it’s screaming development of phulbari…👍

It amazed me when Mansur and Fouzel were given positions in the green cuckoo govt!…..I suspect Yunus had to admit defeat that their experience/expertise and pro fossil fuel politics was needed much more than another couple of tree huggers?

Great article from Mansur bb governor earlier……here’s an even earlier article where he rams it home about domestic coal resources,this is not new to Mansur and Fouzel the energy minister…..they knew the country was in a hole years ago and this is the only way out 👍

Like the economy of Bangladesh, its power and energy sector is also suffering from a liquidity crisis. The present interim arrangement for repayment of outstanding bills that the government is pursuing will not last long. These must be made free from subsidy by adopting a comprehensive plan. Besides exploration and extraction of coal and petroleum resources, required initiatives must be taken to increase contributions of solar and other renewable energy. Otherwise, it will not be possible to come out of the deep hole.

Is there any opportunity for Bangladesh to reduce the stress created by increasing reliance on imported energy by increasing the contribution of fuel from indigenous sources?

There is no denying that Bangladesh so far could not economically utilize its primary fuel resources. This led to progressively increased dependence on imported energy. Bangladesh must explore and utilize discovered coal resources. There is scope for extending the utilization of natural gas as a transition fuel. Bangladesh must invest in coal, oil, and gas exploration in a planned manner. This will relieve Bangladesh from the stress created by imported fuel.

Just a re run of how far GCM can go with this till all projects are signed up……

In early 2025 a seminar and discussion was organised by the Hydrocarbon Unit of the Power and Energy Ministry, in attendance was the Power and Energy Adviser along with numerous Academics and Mining Experts. Information about the proposal to mine Phulbari from Asia Energy was presented. The overall consensus was that the way forward was to recommend to the next elected government that the project,utilising open pit mining, should go ahead. The Energy Adviser stressed that 'mining of our resources is essential for relieving stress on fuel imports ', he is further reported to have stated that $15bn in funding was on offer from a 'mining company' to facilitate the project. The project will be part of the Chinese Belt and Road initiative.

PowerChina, having signed a MOU to develop the mine, including removal of the overburden, is also working with the government on implementing the nearby Teesta River reclamation project, it has been speculated that overburden from Phulbari would be utilised in that process. As with the Phulbari project discussions are ongoing between stakeholders, future partners and the government. China has stated it will expand Rail projects in Bangladesh ready for the Teesta Project, doing so could also facilitate the transportation of Phulbari coal to existing coal power plants.

Dhaka has formally moved to implement the much-discussed Teesta Master Plan with Chinese funding and technology under the interim government of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. The government has sent an official proposal to Beijing for the first phase of the project, estimated at Taka 9,150 crore.

Teesta $1bln project,very important for development of the area and water control,but in the scheme of projects small for Power China ??…….$1bln river reclamation deal and a hospital is the key to the big prize of the $100bln mineral resource at Phulbari………👊

Strangely enough the Teesta project is predicted to start in 2026 and be completed in 2029……that seems to run conveniently in conjunction with what GCM are hoping for….2-3yrs to first coal with overburden going into Teesta??…….👊

It looks like cash is still being poured into some of these corrupt govt agencies as the cuckoo govt is overwhelmed and understaffed to deal with the issues at large

There are currently 232 autonomous, self-governed, and statutory government institutions in the country. Because of irregularities, corruption, and inefficiency, most of these institutions are not providing much return to the government. Instead, funds from the state treasury are being spent to keep them operational. According to economic reviews, as of June 30, 2024, the debt of these institutions stood at BDT 2.18 trillion. In FY 2023–24, the government provided BDT 507.83 billion in subsidies to these institutions.
