The key thing with SMR is getting the 1st generation installed and establishing a supply chain. This is where maintaining the advantage of being ahead in the design approval process. If RR can do that it will make it more difficult for any new competitor to challenge them due to the high entry cost

I'd be disappointed in Turfan if he let Starmer get a photo opportunity in the Derby plant without getting a commitment to pursue SMRs

Heres my tuppence worth based only on my personal opinion.

The shortlisting of 2 proposals was due to be announced by mid June which has now been put back to early July. Part of this has to be because of the election and the purdah of the government making policy announcements during an election. I also think the decision has already been made and Tufan knows this and knows this is in RR's favour.

Tufan is making the right noises about it being in the national interest and about the need to establish supply chains quickly. Essentially he is gently keeping the pressure on both Labour & the Conservatives to deliver. If he thought otherwise there is no way he would have allowed Starmer into the Derby factory in the middle of an election for a photo opportunity. Additionally if he thought it was going against RR, i'd expect him to be a lot more vocal, especially during an election campaign where he has a lot more leverage to make it an election issue for Starmer & Sunak.

In the medium term if more airlines opt for Airbus it's good for RR however long term GE & PW will have production capacity and will be need to be a cheaper option to survive. They won't be long knocking on the Airbus door looking to be considered as an alternative

If a General Election is called in May, the government are not allowed to make significant policy announcements once parliament has been dissolved. "If" there is an election in May there will likely be a Labour government and their position on SMRs could be different (or not) to the current governments.

Personally I reckon the Conservatives will hang on till the autumn in the hope of an improvement in the polls. By that time the SMR announcement will have been made.

Anyone can apply for planning permission but wanting to do something and being able to, are 2 separate things

The UK government does not have the £billions required to make SMRs happen so they're going to have to go to the markets / institutions and borrow it.

When the war in Ukraine eventually ends, the price of raw materials will rise significantly especially when they start to rebuild.

China is a far bigger market and that is growing. Overall RR are making more money than last year.

The risk with GKP has been the geo politics where global politics has largely been stable. Putin / Russia / high oil price has knocked that on its head. In global terms the risk is now lower in Kurdistan / Iraq is now lower compared to other regions and therefore more attractive to major oil companies who want to have secure supplies.

The key issue is who(in a place where corruption is the norm) can be bought off to ensure that any sale goes through
