RE: UK-US trade deal...11 Apr 2025 00:43
"Ron Vara" is a fictional character created by Peter Navarro, a former White House trade adviser under President Donald Trump. The name is an anagram of "Navarro" and was used by him as a pseudonymous source in several of his books, including Death by China. Navarro described Vara as a Harvard-educated economist and China hawk, attributing to him extreme anti-China statements. However, no such person exists, and Navarro has admitted to fabricating the character, referring to it as an "inside joke."
So we have a felon and storyteller making decisions about Tariffs, global trade. Analyst talking about the *Bottom, jeez, it doesn't get any lower than this....
"The use of a fictional persona in nonfiction works has drawn criticism from scholars and co-authors. For instance, economist Glenn Hubbard, who co-authored a book with Navarro, expressed disapproval upon learning that Vara was not real. Additionally, in December 2019, a memo purportedly written by Ron Vara circulated in Washington, D.C., advocating for tariffs against China. Navarro later confirmed he had authored the memo himself.
The revelation of Ron Vara's fictitious nature has raised concerns about the credibility of Navarro's work and the ethical implications of using a fabricated source to support policy positions."
