gas lifeline for Europe is the smart move.
Cash-rich neighbour Norway may play a part in solving Europe’s gas woes. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store hinted on Wednesday that the Scandinavian nation, a staunch NATO ally and a European Free Trade Association member, might be open to gas price discounts for energy-starved European nations. It’s the smart move, given that the size of the discount is less important than the gesture.

Drastic Russian cuts to gas supplies to Europe this year have turned Norway into the European Union’s main source of the fuel. Before the Ukrainian war, the Scandinavian nation was covering just 20% of the 27-nation bloc’s gas demand, less than Russia’s 40%. After ramping up production, it is forecast to deliver nearly 90 billion cubic metres of gas to the EU this year, or nearly 25% of the bloc’s demand, according to research firm Rystad Energy. That’s higher than the 20% Russia will likely provide. For Britain, Norwegian gas imports could rise from 41% of total demand in 2021 to nearly 50% in 2022.

British investors are selling shares faster than they did after Brexit..

British investors pulled a record £1.9bn from stock market funds last month as anxiety among savers ramped up despite rising markets...
The amount withdrawn far exceeded what was taken out in July 2016, days after the Brexit referendum spooked investors and led to a sharp fall in the FTSE 100, Britain’s benchmark index.

Investors took £2bn out of funds in the first 17 days of August – seemingly taking profits as the British stocks rose 1.1pc, according to Calastone, a research firm. Markets dropped 3.4pc in the subsequent fortnight when investors sat on their hands, with a few brave savers adding £100m back into funds.

Savers have taken more than £4bn out of funds this year even though cash savings rates remain significantly below inflation. The consumer prices index measure of inflation hit 10.1pc in July, a 40-year high, and is expected to reach 13pc by the end of the year. Economists at the investment bank Goldman Sachs predicted it could almost double to 22pc by 2023 if energy costs continue to spiral.

Despite this, investors have retreated to cash and other safer investments. Money was taken out of all stock markets although Calastone said British funds were worst hit – shedding £759m last month. North American funds followed, enduring outflows of £426m.

Tens of thousands of firms 'face collapse' without help...

Tens of thousands of businesses are at risk of going under without government support because of soaring energy bills, according to insolvency experts.

Red Flag Alert, which monitors the financial health of firms, told the BBC previously profitable companies are experiencing significant losses.

Among those that survive, many will be forced to make workers redundant, the consultancy said.

Firms are waiting to hear if they will get help with their energy bills.

On Thursday the government, led by new Prime Minister Liz Truss, is expected to announce significant financial support for households facing an 80% rise in the energy price cap in October.

Businesses are not covered by the cap, however, and Red Flag is warning that more than 75,000 larger firms that are high energy users are at risk of insolvency or are likely to lay off staff without government support.

The government's plan is expected to include some relief for businesses - but details are not yet known.

According to Red Flag, many firms will face a choice between paying wages or paying energy bills.

"Businesses can't absorb these costs and they're going to be forced very quickly into a decision about headcount or being able to pay energy bills," said chief economist Nicola Headlam. "That's going to be the reality and it's coming down the track very quickly."

Yes, I agree, as most have been following the EU prior to Brexit, Greece, Italy ETC, mess
I was in Germany, Hamburg, during the vote and I spoke with many Germans and most if not, all would have liked a ref like the UK as they would vote to leave…personally I think the UK will one day be better for it, the vote was to leave therefore democracy won and I’ve never had a problem with it but I have to say being part of the EU was never something I seen as necessary..
The situation In the UK now is tough although I don’t think Labour have the solution and It’s hard to see them winning an election for a couple more terms despite the Tories, Johnson’s constant lying, so politically it’s another mess but people don’t seem to have any confidence in Labour, Kinnock years come to mind…

in emergency talks as gas bills are expected to hit £4,400

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng will hold emergency talks with energy sector chiefs today as the price cap was forecast to hit more than £4,400 in January.

In a new dire outlook for households, Cornwall Insight said bills are set to soar to around £3,582 in October, from £1,971 on Tuesday, before rising even further in the new year.

There has been widespread anger at Shell, BP and British Gas owner Centrica announcing bumper financial results while households struggle to cope with soaring bills.

Home Inventory Soars at Record Rate With US Buyers Pulling Back
