UK interest rates: How high could they go and how would a rise affect you?

The Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates for the 10th time at midday, but analysts predict it is nearing the peak.

The benchmark rate is widely expected to go up from 3.5% to 4%, after the Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

The rate is already at its highest level for 14 years.

The impact of a rate rise would be felt by borrowers - through higher mortgage and loan costs - and in better returns for savers across the UK.

At its December meeting, the Bank rate was increased from 3% to 3.5% - the latest in a series of increases since December 2021.

Analysts believe the rate will peak at 4.5% in the summer.

interesting to note that on that TA post the SP went down initially...

My guess is the SP will decline with little upside until the 10th Feb...then it is at the mercy of the

'UK likely to fall into recession in 2023'
The UK economy beat expectations and grew by 0.1% in November.

This means it's much less likely that the country was in recession at the end of 2022, says James Smith, who's from the think tank the Resolution Foundation.

However, Smith says in a tweet the Bank of England and the OBR are "forecasting the economy to contract through much of 2023 - so we're likely to fall into recession".

Smith also says we should put the UK's current economic situation into a broader context.

Looking at GDP alone, he says it's currently 6.4% below the pre-pandemic trends (during the third quarter of the year). And it is more than 20% below the pre-financial crisis trend, Smith adds.

"This is clearly disastrous," he says.

While the surprise today was that the economy grew in the month of November, the trend over three months is still down. Overall the UK economy still appears to be weak but it is not certain it is in formal recession, and depends on the next set of figures released in a month.

The World Cup boosted pubs, pizza delivery and the ad industry helping the economy more than normal. But a series of previous monthly figures from the past year were revised down, leaving the less volatile three-month measure heading downwards. The impact of strikes was partly behind falls in transport and postal services of 4.7% and 3.1% respectively.

So a mixed bag of new and one-off factors, and statistical revisions, that will probably still leave the Bank of England further raising rates next month, as it does its most thorough assessment of the state of economy"
