I think this statement from the article sums up the current thinking...

Remember, what movie theaters hate the most is when a studio sends a film to streaming or PVOD; that’s the biggest stab in the back."
It's a little ridiculous to assume that the attendance numbers are/should be comparable to any other time over the last 50 years.
Statements by Mooky indicate that the business is operating in a stable manner given the circumstances. Moving the dates of release is not necessarily a bad thing. If theatrical windows are extended now it is creating opportunity to wean people back in to old normal and minimise movie 'waste'.
It's a 'go try it and find out' situation. Friends and family are doing it. They're saying it's safe, so it must be.
Move other releases like Wonder Woman... Let the crowds get use to returning to cinema. Don't rush, play the game.
