Microsoft has been aware of Professor Ronjon Nag's work since the early stages of his career.

In the late 1980s or early 1990s, when Nag was working on cursive handwriting recognition at Stanford University, Microsoft representatives sought out his research. They approached Nag's professor, David Rumelhart, requesting access to their code and data related to this technology.
