I think Hydrogen will be the automotive fuel of the future but not in the immediate future. The biggest recent advance for Hydrogen is the storage and transportation of it in the form of CH4 and its separation at the point of use through a special membrane as developed by an Australian university.
Hydrogen will never run out and the refuelling of a vehicle will be able to be achieved in the fraction of the time required for a battery powered vehicle. (Can you visualize the queues on the M^, at peak times, of vehicles waiting for their 20 to 30 minutes on a charger?)
