What's not to understand?. A trader buys 1000 shares. His next trade is for a monetary amount not a quantity of shares. This equates to 999 shares. He is left with a share in stock. QED.

There are no codes given by sales of shares in single digit numbers. It is merely the mm's balancing their books when they have the odd share or two left over.
