ENI has updated its guidance, and will pay a special divi if (and only if) the average oil price over a reporting period exceeds a set figure. It's hard to see what the US objectives are. Nuclear stuff is surely sorted, if it ever existed. Bombing more of the country to rubble won't produce regime change. Stopping missile attacks on neighbours is challenging without ground troops, and who knows how Iran's supplies compare with supplies of defence missiles.

Trump knew how to get out of Vietnam, bone spurs, I'm not seeing his plan to get out of this mess. Which is good in a way for us investors, but not how I like making money.

You're right, Meoryou, trying to predict how the politics will affect the share price is a mare. Trump is in a mess, as long as Iran restricts the straits and the regime survives. Can he bomb the regime into submission, or cause a popular uprising among people he is bombing? A ground attack on Kharg Island is high risk and doesn't solve anything around the straits. Or does he try to force the straits - it's obvious why his natural allies are saying ¨America First¨ to that one. And if Putin manages to take advantage and make a breakthrough in Ukraine, or China surprises us all, even more to consider. Meanwhile oil reserves tick downwards, no issues yet but give it time. I think the oil price will continue to climb, slowly, and am not selling my shares, yet, but realise I might regret it.

Today's dividend conversion notice reminded me, a few years back BP offered a scrip alternative (allowing shareholders to take new shares instead of divi cash). Anyone think they should reintroduce it? Over time it increases shares in issue unless accompanied by a buyback, but it frees some upfront cash for BP and is cheaper for shareholders who want to own more. Anyone got thoughts around this, I'll not pretend I fully understand all the pros and cons?

JamTart - Thanks for sharing, it's good to see how blinkered some folk are. The guy even has the cheek to mention Suez and the Falklands - the US didn't step up there. The US didn't even get properly involved in WW2 until Hitler declared war on it following Pearl Harbor, 6 months after Hitler invaded Russia in 1941. Yet Europe is meant to weigh in at once, to an aerial campaign that has no clear end plan, and seems to be started by familiar shouts about nuclear weapons from Benji? Much as I can sympathise with the Iranian people, how is continuing to bomb their country to bits now helping them, or anyone else apart from American weapons manufacturers?

I'm with Humpy here, the market isn't chasing up the price because it expects a short-term profit boost. The extra profit will stay in the business, so it should be a longer term revaluation. Like the former buybacks, debt repayments leave a bit more money in the company each quarter. That said, BP has a long history of spikes and troughs, so you might be better to toss a coin.

Thanks, Dicklaw. As you say, I'm just making the point that the HoL is an affront to democracy. Nothing Stanley says bothers me, and seems he doesn't even know the Archbishop of Canterbury is a woman. As, incidentally, is the head of the Vatican's legislative council. Iran, not so much.

Made me think, how many countries allow a religious sect unelected seats in their Parliament? I can only find one, but it's not Iran (if Wikipedia is right, they hold elections for religious seats) - any British readers care to guess?

In the interests of balance, I'll accept that Trump is very, very good at winning wars. After all, he's won this one 5 times already. And he's not stopping until he wins it at least once more. Whatever a ¨Win¨actually means here.

Stanley - You're just inventing arguments to support your opinion. Look at the facts. The mullahs have run Iran for 50 years. How often have they threatened the west? How often have they shut the straits? Nobody here is going to support their repression of Iranians, but Trump so far has done nothing to ease their suffering. He's now trying to sucker the west into sorting our the mess he has created, by sending warships to the area. That misses the point, there's a far easier way to get free traffic again. It's called diplomacy, and Trump ending his attacks.

Sorry, Jam Tart, most of us just don't see the "threat¨ from Iran. And we remember Benji has been saying since the 1990s that the ¨imminent¨ Iranian bomb must be stopped, for his own electoral advantage. So they've not exactly been good at developing it, have they? I'm no supporter of Iran (or nuclear weapons for that matter), but it seems to me you are the one with eyesight issues.

Birdsong deserves an award for their explanation of why it's OK for scary states like North Korea and warmongering (and threatened) states like Israel to have nuclear weapons, but when Iran might be trying to develop them the sensible thing to do is blast it to bits. Of course, it's because the 'mad mullahs' (looking at you, Stanley) who run Iran might actually be willing to use them !!! Trump just keeps his as some sort of conversation piece, I suppose.
