You are getting confused with a share save scheme which a staff member pays into on a monthly basis for a fixed period of time with the option but not the obligation to invest in shares at the end of the period if advantageous to do so and shares which are awarded by the bank by way of bonus usually which have to be held for a certain period minimum.

You use the word profit. But ultimately the only point of profit is extra to spend. So my instructor from Fidelity Investments was quite correct.

Not all investors here are institutions or well off middle class people like many of you. A sizeable minority are old pensioners who would much rather have a special dividend to spend, cash in hand, than a theoretical smaller decease in the SP. When I was an IFA I often used to get worried old ladies phoning to say capital had gone down. And I replied bur what has happened to income. They said it is the same or gone up!

How many here know the definition of investment. It is to provide future income. Buy backs give no choice. Dividends on the other hand can be spent or invested. The choice is with the investor. This was an illegal thing in USA as their regulators understood.

But the benefits of buyback are illusory. If you had had a special dividend you could have spent or invested it. Your choice! I have an investment trust which sold an unquoted investment and returned it in cash tax free to investors. Nice EH!

Which is why people are so much better off with a Chartered Financial Planner. We had a very sophisticated risk measurement tool and such a fund would have been beyond the pale for most people. Ironically of course when Woodford was still at Invesco he played by the book and very successfully. I think having his own outfit has gone to his head and he is very arrogant. I once went to an Invesco conference when one of the speakers, not Woodford, referred to the n..... in the woodpile. A bit startling, spanner in the works would have been better. An African gent sitting in front of me was unmoved however!
