Spain, faced with the challenge of promoting natural gas to "be a modern country"
Betting on the use of natural gas is key for Spain to be "a modern country." This is the main argument defended by the expert Vaclav Smil, scientist and professor emeritus of the University of Manitoba, at a conference recently delivered in our country.
Smil, considered one of the top 100 world thinkers, considered in his talk that Spain must "boost more" the use of natural gas to be "at the same level as other European countries, to be a modern country." Therefore, it is necessary to bet on natural gas as a better option in the current context, for its characteristics and flexibility. "It is a very flexible fuel, and can be used from home to industry, even in blast furnaces," he said.
The main challenges worldwide, as the professor recalled, are to reduce the use of coal in the short term, increase the use of natural gas, reduce energy intensity and increase efficiency, and advanced that the energy transition will still need several decades.
In Smil's opinion, it is not convenient for countries to bet only on renewable energy, since there are areas where there is hardly any sun or wind. "Not all places are suitable for renewable energy, so it is important to keep in mind that this is where natural gas has a great role," he said.
In his conference he also emphasized the fact that coal plants must disappear to avoid even greater global warming. To do this, he insisted on the need to reduce the number of coal plants that exist in the world from the current 150,000 to about 95,000.
