Just accidently sold my GGP holding of 20,000. The dangers of these mobile apps and my sleep deprivation :\ or that I'm just an idiot. Gonna wait for it to settle and move it to my ISA anyway so I do hope I can buy for 19p next week.
Morning! Thanks Elise! I’m a total novice don’t know what I’m doing...but among my confusion yesterday at the drop and realisation of these ‘MMs’ (they didn’t tell me about this in the books on investing!) I couldn’t forget the abundance of positive sentiment and all the incredible research the people here have been sharing, so I wasn’t too spooked. However I bought in Feb, for like 5p or something, then sold and did it again three times - I had car tax to pay and stuff. I kept coming back as I knew I wanted to be invested but I don’t see how others have such a strong opinion on when & why people sell. I only have around 20,000 shares and I don’t think I could ever hope to afford more than that, so I won’t be buying a house anytime soon but I do hope that I could turn the 4k into 12k before next tax year so I can put it in my isa and be in a better place :) have to start somewhere.
I am one of those weaker ones...trying to make some of that money stuff out of nothing and slightly disheartened today, and then something came over me at 4.29pm and I bought a grands worth. Then saw 27p at 4.30pm and thought I should run here and inform everyone, but obviously didn’t need to cos you guys are mental. Thanks for teaching me a bit. I was advised not to hang out on LSE bulletins as “all an extreme bunch of yey sayers”, but it hasn’t hurt so far and I really enjoy reading you all.Christina
Today Freetrade announced they’re gonna put SEE behind a paywall, among a few other stocks, so users will very soon have to pay 10-15£ a month I think for the Plus account to be able to invest in SEE. I think this will put a lot of people off and I’m just going to continue buying it the old way with my traditional broker now as that’s where I have my ISA anyway. Kind of defeats the point of commission-free investing, but it was good while it lasted. At least it will stop my OCD trying to get my holding to a round figure in £1.76 intervals due to having nothing better to do !
'Spreads bigger but paying 4.2p when everyone else paying 4.15p but commission free is ok for small trades. As you say if buy bigger trades you get the same price but Com free still. ' ----- That's exactly what happens yes! So the spread is bigger if you're making a smaller trade? I didn't know this. I find it's anything less than a £100 trade. Thanks.
I am aware that I do small trades because I'm bored or otherwise emotional. It's not healthy. Whereas with other broker I can't be bothered to log in each time and hardly trade due to the small fee, so i'll save up until I have a big amount. But it has its place, so expect the small trades they are here to stay.
They say they don't. It must be something I don't yet understand then, but I'm skeptical and I'd prefer to have guaranteed time-limited quotes to save me being disgruntled. However it is only petty, because if I'm going to invest I'm going to invest and shouldn't be worried about a few pence. Trouble is FT does make it more emotional for you. I've been moaning about not having any spare cash to increase my SEE holding at 2.9p and then SP goes up and bam! I've got some from somewhere because I don't want to miss out and it's so eaasssy. Now my average is 3.5p.
I'll try to answer but please know I don't know what I'm on about. They are starting to offer a tiered sort of membership now, so I have a 'basic' general investment account but they're continuing to develop their offering. People who pay more for 'alpha' accounts or something, get more features/access to more markets etc. They also as stated already charge £3 for the ISA monthly. I already have mine with iWeb (used to be IG but they forced me to pay £24/quarter and as I mentioned, I'm poor).
Oh and you used to have to pay £1 per trade when they first started out, unless happy to wait until end of day for position to be filled or whatever. Done away with this now and all instant trades are free.
On the spread...I personally believe there is something going on with this as I use a number of other references, mostly now investing.com app on my phone to check live prices, but every time I make a trade on FT the price is that bit higher. One thing I like with the other brokers is that they give you a quote and it's up to you whether you accept it, but the final price is stated right there.
I don't have the knowledge of how it's supposed to work, and I'm aware there's a buy, a sell and a mid price. But I do think FT doesn't keep up somehow...unless you make a large trade and then I notice slightly better prices...
Freetrader here, hello all. I am personally responsible for a few of those minuscule trades, because I am of a very different class probably and have no 'play' money, so FT lets me play. Probably have the smallest holding of you all. Virtually no commission, though it's a bit hit and miss and I have a better experience with the broker account that does charge, however, Freetrade is great for what it is (makes this 'investing' thingy accessible to us) and I am trying to get my old man to sign up, but he's set in his ways and prefers to pay extortionate comms... hi dad.
You are all very intellectual here and I can't believe how much time you all spend on this, but I'm very happy to be invested here. I don't have a clue so I will stay quiet but it was time to sign up. I will continue enjoying all of your chat. Best wishes :)
