Glencore, the £43 billion global mining powerhouse and the world’s largest producer of cobalt, has taken a large strategic investment in Britishvolt, the company building the UK’s first gigafactory.

Britishvolt has begun construction on a new factory on the site of an old power station at Blyth on the northeast coast to manufacture enough batteries to power 300,000 zero-emission electric cars a year by 2027.

Genius....That’s because last year former chief executive, Ivan Glasenberg and his anointed successor and then head of the coal business, Gary Nagle, did something clever.

They committed Glencore to reducing its carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, primarily by simply allowing the mines to deplete until they run down the resources to the point of closure.

There’d be no expansions of existing mines to offset the depletion, Glenore’s total emissions would reduce by 40 per cent (relative to 2019 levels) by 2035 and its ambition would be to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

That strategy is ingenious because it disarmed the environmental groups and ESG investors without harming Glencore’s prospective profitability.

America’s appetite for fossil fuels has come roaring back as the economy cranks into gear, providing a boost to energy groups but flying in the face of Washington’s drive to slash emissions.

Motorists’ return to the roads following the loosening of pandemic restrictions is pushing up fuel demand and the bottom lines of oil refiners, while a shift away from natural gas in power generation has been a boon to coal miners.

The resurgence comes as floods and wildfires in many parts of the world lay bare the destructive impacts of climate change, which a landmark report last week determined was “unequivocally” the result of human activity — mainly through the burning of fossil fuels

Petrol demand collapsed last year as the pandemic forced people to stay home. But the vaccine rollout and a loosening of restrictions has allowed American motorists to return to roads in force this summer. Petrol consumption hit record levels of more than 10m barrels a day early last month.

The surge in demand has pushed up fuel prices and sparked alarm in the Biden administration, which last week pressed Russia and Saudi Arabia to increase oil production to cool the rally.

The federal Energy Information Administration expects Americans to burn through a daily average of 8.8m barrels of petrol this year, up 10 per cent on last year, but below the 9.3m b/d consumed in 2019, largely thanks to an increase in people working from home.

Qz..whis not trading glencores trading arm has literally made a fortune in a pandemic its mining side and cost.. copper ...cobalt..oh and its ...wheat grain mine grain mine didn't di too badly either in a pandemic ;-))))...stalling point is glencore has hit its usual SP roof it seems to bounce off £3.35 but things are a lot different now with glencore. investors will need to digest the difference too before understanding that the SP is going to be trading much higher, The reasons,.. debt has improved dramatically,that's some debt reduction they have achieved with debt fully reduced bigger and better dividend greater SP....ans with stimulus in the good old USA and China amd in Europe too things look very goid for Glencore I may if said this before but I wouldn't be too surprised if glencore re visits its IPO price
