'So it can take as long as it likes for cruising to re-start'
Really? This is a company with huge fixed (and variable!) costs that is haemorrhaging cash every day.
Every day without cruises is a body blow, and the airlines are in a similar position.
They simply have to have more paying customers to survive, and quickly.
And survive means being able to meet their debt obligations, not making a profit.

Up to 2 or 3 cruise ships per day used to be in Palma, it made no difference which day, it was every day.....
Not popular with the locals; they just drop off their rubbish, pollute the city (wind blows SW from port over city), and clog up the old town with huge dozy groups. Seems these people are incapable of discovering a city under their own steam / initiative.....
Apparently there were 13 requests by different cruise ships to come to Palma in October.
None have been granted yet.
It's chicken and egg for the cruise lines. They have to try and sell cruises but they're not yet sure where they can go. And if they do get permission to come to Palma (unlikely this year), then will they have customers?
The sight of hundreds of tightly packed dummy cruise passengers stumbling around old town Palma whilst the locals have myriad restrictions would NOT go down well.
There was big resistance against cruise ships in the Spanish Med BEFORE the virus; calls for cleaner fuel, fewer boats, fewer passengers etc.
I can only imagine what the view is now.
IMO there will be strong reluctance to allow cruise ships back into Palma, Barcelona, etc. whilst the virus is still raging around us.
Venice is another good example.
As for doing 'local cruises' I can't imagine much demand for a UK or German waters cruise. Anyone really fancy visiting Skegness in the rain?!
In Greece, a dozen crew members on the first cruise ship to dock after the coronavirus lockdown have tested positive, the coastguard said on Monday.
The Maltese-flagged Mein Schiff 6 operated by German travel giant TUI, with 922 passengers on board, is currently moored off the Aegean island of Milos, a coastguard spokeswoman told AFP.
The positive results surfaced after tests on 150 among the crew’s 666 crew members, she said.
“They are assistant staff,” the spokeswoman said. “They have been isolated on board, and we are awaiting instructions from the public health agency on where the ship is to sail.”
The TUI ship was the first to return to Greek waters after lockdown measures imposed in March, local operators said, docking at Iraklio in mid-September.
"Bernie, I don't think sneezing is a symptom of Covid. Lol."
Try telling that to super scared 80 year old. Sneezing is the new social faux pas.
There are really some weird people on here.
Scenario A ; 3 days into cruise, a passenger exhibits COVID like symptoms (coughs or sneezes basically) and is put into isolation awaiting test result. Everyone is freaked out, but he comes back negative and we wait for the next sneezer.
Scenario B; 3 days into cruise, a passenger exhibits COVID like symptoms (coughs or sneezes basically) and is put into isolation awaiting test result. Everyone is freaked out, and even more so when he comes back positive. Everyone is put into isolation in their cabins and COVID quickly spreads throughout the ship via food deliveries, etc. Ship refused entry to any port so has to stand off until passengers can be repatriated. An old boy dies. All over the news. Suddenly people not quite so keen to go cruising....
Also, not sure about other ports, but no way is a cruise ship being allowed into Palma de Mallorca any time soon.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating; airlines are like the canary in the coal mine for cruise companies.
There is no chance of Carnival recovering until airline stocks do.
Ryanair just said that they have just 10% bookings for Nov and Dec. Rest assured none of those flying will be going to get on a cruise.
Only when people are allowed to / feel confident enough to fly again, can we even start to think about cruises happening.
But cruises are unique environments where the passengers could be trapped on board for weeks, offshore, refused entry to any port.
You missed the bit about where the cruises will actually go? Like in the Med for example.
Alyhels,
Any link to back up the claim that 'demand is very strong indeed' ?
Where will the cruises go exactly given the many quarantines in place and the refusal to enter most ports?
The market is very volatile at the moment and swings of 5 to 10% per day are not unusual for this share, airlines and banks to name but a few.
But nothing fundamental has changed.
COVID cases are increasing throughout Europe and the word 'lockdown' is increasingly being muttered.
None of this points to more cruises happening.
I think there has to be some sort of announcement soon from Carnival about how it's going to survive because the current game plan just is not going to work.
I think the most logical solution would be to moor the ships in the most attractive spots possible (Thames, Palma, Nice, etc.??) and use them as floating hotels that don't move. Easy on, easy off. Become a temporary hotel company, and not a cruise company. It's the only way to secure some short term revenue.
Alyhels, the SP is going down, so why would Mr.Magic be 'taking any heat'?
There is simply going to be extremely little travel of any kind up to and beyond Xmas, let alone cruises.
I live in Palma de Mallorca and there is ALOT of local resistance to cruise ships here, because the passengers just stroll around the Old Town in huge groups, choking everything up, without ever actually buying anything.
Not to mention the pollution caused by the ships burning HSFO (the cheapest, nastiest stuff you can possibly buy).
I just cannot see any good news coming along for Carnival for at least 3 more months, and 'normal' activity is years away.
There seems to be a 'throwing in the towel' mentality at the moment that Xmas will be a washout and nothing will get remotely back to normal before then. Travel plans are being jettisoned left right and centre.
Until something changes, it's hard to see any upside for this share.
The realisation that this is not going to turn around any time soon is slowly dawning.
Airline stocks are a good gauge for Carnival imo, because they will recover first. And so far, no sign of that. People still 'need' to fly; family, business, etc. but no one 'needs' to go on a cruise.
But who would buy one of their brands now?
A brave person.
And even if you find that brave person / company, they will be demanding a rock bottom price.
"P&O to cancel all sailings until early 2021, again very transparent news flow from CCL, clear strategy in place and very good business acumen."
Takes some skill to put a positive shine on that news. They had no choice basically, as no one is going to let them dock and there is not a flight structure in place to get people to/from the ships.
Once you get over those hurdles you then need to find some brave passengers and get the lawyers warmed up for when a passengers contracts COVID on a cruise.
Not sure what would prompt a '60% rise in minutes', COVID waving a white flag perhaps?
I'm not 'invested' here, I'm short.
Seems to me to be one of the safest short positions you could own.
Some are long and have their feelings for being so. I prefer to be short and have my reasons. Each to their own.
It was aimed at this weird and delusional message;
What De-Rampers need to do is go else where with your negative posts “fearful” “sulphur” Ive heard it all ! This will bounce back very well indeed CCL will and are consolidating like they should my god it’s a good job a few of you aren’t running any outfit !
Serious share holders hold this will bounce back ! You others Filtered !
Not sure in which world a 30% drop in share value is 'not a concern for investors', but hey.....
What are your bones telling you today?
Warren Buffet was asking.
