'If they let it be mined'
Hit the nail on the head there.
Thar Block VI's development has faced obstacles, with reports indicating the project to build a power plant and coal-to-gas/liquid facilities was "put on ice" by authorities. There have been accusations from Sindh's Minister of Energy that the federal government is blocking investment from a UK-based company, Oracle, which intended to develop the block. While Oracle has also been pursuing a solar project in the same block, the overall development of Block VI has been subject to delays and uncertainties.
Initial Plans and CPEC Involvement:
Thar Block VI was initially included in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) program, with Oracle Power receiving financing support in 2014 and the project gaining priority status in 2016. The project was also included in the Oil & Gas working group for development support in 2019.
Obstacles and Accusations:
A 2022 media report stated the power plant and coal-to-gas/liquid project was "put on ice". Sindh's Minister for Energy, Imtiaz Shaikh, blamed the federal government for blocking Oracle's investment, claiming it would have boosted power generation and provided gas and fertilizer.
Oracle's Dual Focus:
Oracle Power has been pursuing both coal and solar projects in Block VI. While a 1 GW solar plant was announced in 2023, the coal-based project has faced hurdles.
Environmental Concerns:
The development of Block VI, including a planned 1.32 GW coal-to-power plant, has faced scrutiny regarding its environmental impact.
