If you go to work and can not keep an eye on your shares and an RNS is due you put in a stop loss so you do not lose all your money if it is a bad RNS. But very rarely do you get what your stop loss is ,MMs will always or mostly always sell your shares below your stop loss. Never used them myself I think they help MMs to manipulate the share price.
