''Rolls-Royce SMR has welcomed today’s official launch of Great British Nuclear (GBN) by the Energy Security Secretary, Grant Shapps, where he set out plans to select the best Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies and outlined up to £20billion of potential support.
Rolls-Royce SMR’s CEO, Chris Cholerton, said: “Today’s announcement is a vital step forward – we welcome the decision which shows leadership from the Government and gives GBN a clear mandate to make progress at pace.
“A contractual commitment to deploy a fleet of Rolls-Royce SMRs will deliver immediate investment in the supply chain and UK manufacturing, allowing Rolls-Royce SMR to build UK factories and unlocking the enormous potential to export our ‘home-grown’ nuclear technology around the globe – resulting in thousands of high-skilled, long-term jobs.
“We’re eager to progress through the SMR selection process and enter detailed negotiations as quickly as possible. As the only SMR technology in the UK regulatory process, we are at least 18 months ahead of any competitor and are ready to work with the Government at pace to bolster the country’s energy security.”
With a team of more than 600 people already working on the project to develop the UK’s sovereign nuclear technology, Rolls-Royce SMR is making good progress in the independent regulatory process to secure consent for their technology to operate in the UK.
Rolls-Royce SMR offers a unique ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant that can be deployed faster, more affordably and with greater flexibility than large-scale nuclear power plants. Chris added: “The faster decisions are taken, the sooner we can get stable, reliable low-carbon power on the grid – reducing our reliance on imported energy and delivering on our net-zero commitments.”
