Ian, I've thought the same in respect to more fuel being used to charge the battery for every stop / start cycle. The maths don't add up.

And with Hybrids, does anyone know if they pre-heat the engine coolant with excess heat from either the batteries or motors, to reduce the amount of time the coke is used?

MMs probably doing shorters a favour to minimise their losses. Shorter know this is going to fly soon.

The National Grid are in the process of completing their latest power link with Europe, IFA2. If solar and batteries was a more viable option, they would have invested all the cash in to that technology instead.

As stated previously, until local infrastructure is in place (street level charging outside homes, in underground car parks for flats, chargers at work etc), true EV vehicles are not an option for the majority.

The ICE is here to stay in Hybrid vehicles for the foreseeable future and Pd will be in demand for emissions reduction.

I’m not going to debate any more, I’ve made my points now. Back to EUA and our massive Pd asset...

Solar makes up just 4% of renewables {renewables total of 33% for UK), where does your figure of 50% come from? The EV cars will use more power in winter months {lights and heating) when solar output is at its lowest.

So we’ll just install several mega batteries at every service station to allow charging of EV vehicles? Who is paying for that, not the oil producing petrol stations I guess...

Hybrid will be the viable solution for next 15-20 years minimum, plenty of time for us to mine Pd while Engines on hybrid cars still require emissions control.

It all sounds great, but the economics don’t stack up. The feeder tariff and grants have already dropped massively for solar, it was only a handful of early adopters that benefited the most.

Same will happen with EV charge points, while there are relatively few installations and a few early adopters there will be grants galore. As soon as mass adoption starts, the fundings drops because where are they going to fund it from?

As for charging at service stations, the charge might take 35 mins but the queue for a charger could be an hour? How many cars can fuel up at a petrol pump in the 35 mins it takes for an EV partial charge?

Service stations would need some large car parks with every space equipped with EV chargers to cope. And how much power will that lot take? They’ll need to run extra power lines to cope, who’s paying for all the infrastructure?

It will take them 15-20 years to sort infrastructure for electric only cars. Even if they can physically install the charge points now, there’s not enough power stations to supply power to charge all the cars.

Substations will need upgrading, 100A cables installed in to homes for fast charging, charge points on most parking spaces...the list goes on. And as someone mentioned below, who wants to be stuck in snow in an electric car with 20% power left with their kids in the back.

Hybrid will be around for years to come, there are further efficiency gains to be had with internal combustion engines. Technologies like pneumatic valves replacing camshafts and valve springs will see good increases in efficiency because you map valve timing and valve lift to every 50 rpm. It’s like having variable valve timing through the whole rev range.

And I’m sure the governments will realise they’re going to lose massive tax receipts if petrol is killed off altogether, so they will likely extend hybrid cars for the mid term 20-30 years while they figure out how they’re going to pay for another five Hinckley nuclear plants...
