Vanadium is the only element which possesses four adjacent oxidation states (+5, +4, +3, +2) that are all stable in aqueous solution.

it is this UNIQUE feature that allows you to make a flow battery where on one side Vanadium is reduced from oxidation state +5 to oxidation state +4 whilst the SAME STARTING SOLUTION is oxidised from +2 to +3 on the other side of the battery.

The point is that the membrane that you now use to make the flow cell can be non-perfect - it can allow a certain degree to transmission of liquid from one side of the battery to the other. You may lose a tiny amount of capacity when this happens but each time you recharge the battery with electrons you get back to where you started. For ALL OTHER flow batteries any transmission of active species across the membrane is likely to lead to irreversible capacity loss.

This remarkable feature was discovered/invented by Professor Maria Skyllas Kazacos of the university of New South Wales back in the 80's - now that renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels we can actually use it at the megascale.

Yep definitely a Bed & ISA - they moved the Ask higher early on to get those desperate to get in to pay top dollar. Normally there would be no need to increase the Bid at this point but if as I suspect they were short of c. 650K shares from yesterdays trading then perhaps they needed to do that.

The 26.20p paid by the MMs for shares today is still less than the 26.22p paid yesterday. If they cannot get another 400K shares at 26.20p then they will be caught in a bit of a short of their own making and will need to start increasing the Ask should buying continue

By googling ftse aim100 review timetable 2018 you will find a pdf file detailing the review dates. For September it seems that, the effective date is 24 September, the result of the review is announced 5 September and is based on mcap 4 weeks prior to 24th (ie Monday Aug 27th)

BeingPatients list of companies 70-90 (P70: TM17: 348M Mcap ... P90: JOUL: 290M Mcap) is quite different to Ophidian's (P75:Unknown: 310M Mcap ... P90: BRK: 256) though they are generated only a day or so apart.

Beingpatient has JOUL at P90, Ophidian has it at P77 - but both agree on the Mcap as 290M.

Ophidian's list has quite a jump in going up from Renew (294M) to Stafflline (308M) - BP's list would expect to see the following in that gap

Codemasters (CDM) - LonSE quotes 302.4M Mcap
Telford Homes (TEF) - LonSE quotes 307.24M Mcap
M&C Saatchi (SAA) - LonSE quotes 304.7M Mcap

These all appear as AIM companies as far as I can see - is there any reason why Ophidian cannot see them on First Direct's listing ? (Not public so I cannot see it).

Alternatively can anyone else suggest a public listing where we can see a definitive AIM ordering by Mcap.

Pigpen - VRFBs are also the cure for the duck curve. As a doctor I recommend for all Californians 1 VRFB taken each day between the hours of 5 oclock and 9 oclock. More in the summer if they have the aircon on.

Coffeecups - apparently it took quite a bit of persuading for Sumitomo to even come out with this information, I know Vince Algar had been asking them for some time, even before MN took over the reins at Vanitec ESC. Rick Winter of UET is a clear and powerful voice arguing the case for VRFB's - I am hoping that he will be more high profile in the community in future.

I don't think the 275,000 cycle is explicitly written there but it was explicitly said by Rick Winter, about one of Sumitomo's batteries I think

AM - alas that is not how UK government funding works - these things are essentially just a front for returning money to the UK university sector in the hope that somehow the UK can do a bit better job than the absymal one that it has done over the years (pharma excepted) in converting research excellent into Business success.

The UK needs to look at Germany with its huge network of Fraunhofer Institutes - all taking the best and brightest research students and getting them to do useful work at the boundary between research and commercialisation. There is no stigma attached to the latter there, and the people in those institutions have the authority and backing to get stuff done.

Case in point - Fraunhofer ICT in Karlsruhe. They are halfway through installing the 3rd bank of flow cells in the main hall of their 40KWh VRFB (https://www.ict.fraunhofer.de/en/comp/ae/rw.html ) using flow cells made by a local german manufacturer Schmid (Inverters made by german Trumpf-Huttinger of course) and they then get a call from Thyssen-Krupp saying can we try out some of our 2.5meter square flow cells on your battery ?

Sure thing says Peter Fischer, but it will mean we have to cut a big hole in the roof of the building, let me just have a word with the institute director, he comes back later saying sure thing when can you come over. Result three key industrial partners, all based in germany, and all working with the lead commercial research institute in the field. Not a university and it's newfound teams of so-called 'entrepreneur enablers' in sight.

Paludina, interesting but only from a research perspective - the key thing now is that Vanadium Flow Batteries are available in sizes 1 billion times larger than the tiny flow battery shown in that picture.

Let the academics get on with the research grant applications to do this that or the other but we need to focus on getting the message out that VRFBs are here and now commercially and in scale that can start to make an impact on our future energy handling challenges.

Loudspeaker, oh no we may only be making something like 60,000 USD profit per tonne of Nitrovan. Given that Vametco is now producing something like 3750 tonnes per annum this means that they are only going to be make a gross profit of something like 225 Million USD per year, what a disaster.
