Cardiff Marine converts bulker newbuildings into mega-boxships
The Greek owner’s private vehicle, Cardiff Marine, is said to have switched a pair of large bulker newbuildings into two mega- containerships.
Market sources say Cardiff has converted two of the six 208,000-dwt newcastlemaxes it has on order at Singapore-listed Yangzijiang Shipbuilding into a pair of 11,000-teu vessels.
“Cardiff is due to take delivery of four newcastlemaxes in 2016 and two in 2017,” said one source.
“It has managed to persuade Yangzijiang to change the 2017 duo into containerships.”
Shipyard officials decline to confirm the switch, citing contract confidentiality.
Cardiff booked the bulkers at Yangzijiang early last year for less than $55m each.
The conversion move is said to have increased the company’s total spending at the Chinese yard from $330m to $406m, as the boxships are said to be costing around $93m apiece.
