smickster, this is an Anglo-Australian company that happens to have operations in Equador and as such, is no different from any other multi-national business. Why would we want to give away yet more resources to China?

DBW, agreed, however, the one thing Trump has done well is to stand up to China. They are engaged in a form of economic imperialism which we in the West have idly sat by and lapped up. Certain elements of our elite have allowed themselves to become beguiled by their money and have completely ignored the malign influence China now exerts on the World. This is an exact replica of what happened with the corrupt monies which came from Russia, although the Chinese are far more effective.
Fortunately, we have now woken up to what's happening and, at long last, are beginning to take a stand. Anyone who doesn't see China for what it is really does need to spend some time researching the situation.

Only one problem with that - China's relationship with Australia is in the bin with no signs of it improving.

DBW, good question. NCM's tactics are a bit of a mystery and I still don't understand why they made that announcement. It reminded me of those employed by Rothschild's corporate finance team, who have a habit of leaking info to the press about a mandate they've received to sell a company. Most advisors advise against doing this and most owners have no wish to have it known they are selling, but Rothschild's do it so they can make it public and attract as many punters as possible. It's always a discussion one has with a client and most steer clear.
But why would NCM do it? I really have no idea.
One way or another, the ball is currently in NCM's court and clearly they will be thinking about what BHP will do.

As it stands, we currently employ our Nomad, various brokers, Citi, two PR firms, three sets of lawyers with Whites being added to the roster and two proxy specialists. (I'm sure there are others lurking around) Our advisory bills will be enormous.
Still, I guess all this is being done just so that we can meet various corporate and social responsibility requirements as well as making us appear all warm and cuddly to the people in Quito. Obviously, it's got nothing to do with a bunch of really nasty circling predators.

Putting to one side NM's dubious claims about tax being prohibitive, this is so obviously the best route for all concerned - apart from BHP and possibly NCM, although they may not mind if they received £1 per share...that's GGP sorted.
Why can't he see this? Is he prepared to sacrifice everything rather than accept what would be a blindingly good deal? Or perhaps, this is really what he's angling for and will do a deal with BHP accordingly?

Quady, we most certainly agree on having to pay a 'fair price'. I don't imagine for one moment BHP think they'll get this on the cheap and they have the wherewithal to pay it.
They need this resource and they know if they don't buy it, one of their competitors will.

phatt, they are there to lobby existing shareholders in the event of any corporate action such as an AGM, EGM or takeover.
If you hold a significant number of shares but your holding is obscured via a nominee, they will get the full details from the nominee and will make contact directly. This used to be done by financial pr companies and company brokers, but over recent years it's become a more specialised activity.
This is of great relevance here because of the percentage held by private investors.
Forget NM's blather about engaging in Equador etc, that's just a thinly veiled smokescreen. This is about you, me and everyone else on this board.

These companies have been employed for their expertise in tracking down shareholders and engaging with them in the event of a bid. They are not experts in Equadorian politics - indeed, my guess is they had to look it up on google earth.
