Just my thoughts on Tony's tone (so don't go getting all uppity) ...

I've observed that he's been attacked and ridiculed for months or years now, as indeed has LTI, and borne it all stoically, so it's hardly surprising if he is finally starting to fight back.

Some of you lot should maybe think about lessening the personal attacks.

We had this debate when CC got another F&S award in 2014 so I emailed Simon Smith to find out what the deal was.. This was his reply ...

I suggest that whether you interpret this a "buying an award" depends on your stance on the company.

This sounds to me as though it is just the Telefonica / O2 network which is being used, not whichever network is available. To be fair, I have read that Telefonica and Vodafone have intentions to share networks, but I don't know when or how that is going.

CB - your denial of notspots is astonishing and enlightening at the same time. All because you yourself haven't come across one personally, and that's being charitable.

Hi Jake. Is there a project risk document available to the public ? I haven't seen one, but do I take it you have as you imply GPRS not spots aren't on it ?

I would have said that the notspot risk has been mitigated or even eliminated by using RF as backup.

I do accept your point that CC isn't the only solution globally, but as far as I'm aware it is the only non-GPRS solution in UK SMIP.

Sorry, I haven't seen any official not-spot data, but as per my previous post I have no doubt they exist and suggest it is possible they may be being bypassed initially. If the utilities want to forge ahead with GPRS then it is naive to think they wouldn't have access to mobile signal coverage data. As I'm possibly moving house this year, I have checcked coverage for my mobile provider (Three) and find wide areas they do not currently cover at all, and even more where there is only a signal outside.

But let's not get into the whole "do not spots exist" thing again. I can testify that in the last week alone I have visited houses with no mobile signal, one near Hereford and one in a built up residential area on the main A6 road in Derbyshire where there is a faint signal at the front of the house, and none at all at the rear where the meter is situated.

I live in the relatively civilsed south and have not even been offered a smart meter of any sort. I consider myself to be in an area with an unreliable mobile signal - couriers with mobile credit card readers have had to wander up and down the driveway to get a signal. So I would suggest that utilties are first picking the low hanging fruit of properties with strong and reliable signals.
